Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herman-Taylor Funeral Home - Wisconsin Rapids on Mar. 20, 2026.
Donald Lester Stein, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, passed away on March 19, 2026.

Don was born on April 10, 1930, in Celina, Ohio, to Walter R. Stein and Irene (Renbarger) Stein. He was raised in Troy, Ohio and began his college education at Miami University in Ohio before graduating with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1952. It was there that he met his wife of 73 years Patricia Mahaney.

Don and Pat were married at the First Presbyterian church in Dearborn, MI on June 27, 1953, he then spent 2 years serving for the US Army from 1954 to 1956.

Don was employed by Wyandotte Chemical Corporation (ERCO) which brought him to Port Edwards, WI in 1966 to manage the new plant start up. He then joined Consolidated Papers Incorporated in 1968 as Maintenance Manager for the Stevens Point Division and retired as Vice President in 1993.

Don served on multiple community organization boards and actively participated in various volunteer programs.

Don is survived by his wife, Pat Stein; his children, Donald Stein Jr. and his wife Sharon (Booth), Gregory Stein, and Susan Stein and her husband Scott Ellefson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joseph Stein and wife Liza Gabrielse, Aaron Stein, Shane Stein, and Lauren (Stein) Mattson; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by son Douglas R. Stein, daughter-in-law Connie Stein and granddaughter Lindsey Stein.

Don was an avid University of Michigan sports fan, "GO BLUE!" and could be found on the tennis court well into his 80's. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, riding horses and volunteer work.

Per Don's request he will be cremated and there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Incourage Community Foundation in his memory. www.incouragecf.org

Don will be remembered for his servant leadership in business and the community, always thinking about what was in the best interest of those around him and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
