Donald Richard Steinbauer, 64, of Findlay, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in Bellevue, Ohio on June 16, 1960 to the John and Rosemary (Reinhart) Steinbauer. Don and the love of his life, Mary Lou (Dorobek), met while they attended St. Joseph's Central Catholic High School in Fremont, Ohio. They married on December 15, 1979 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Don is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, and by his children: Gary (Megan) Steinbauer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Adam (Laura) Steinbauer of Apollo Beach, Florida; and Kyle (Andrea) Steinbauer of Powell, Ohio. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Alex, Beckett, Caleb, Hayden, Jacob, Mila, Owen, and Sean; 12 brothers and sisters; and numerous loving nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kenneth.
Don spent his childhood working with his siblings and cousins on the family's fruit and vegetable farm in Clyde, Ohio; notably, helping drive a tractor by age 6. There, he developed an impressive ability to fix nearly everything. He learned the value of hard work and doing a job well and accrued countless stories of near misses and other hijinks while working alongside his siblings and cousins. When he was 18, Don left the family business and sowed the seeds for his long successful career in the agricultural field. Don started as a crop applicator and finished his 45-year career as a General Manager for Nutrien's Northern Ohio Division. Don was well-respected by his colleagues for his resourcefulness, business acumen, and integrity.
Don's happy place was Middle Bass Island, Ohio or MBI, where he fully embraced all aspects of island life. On MBI, he enjoyed tinkering with his fleet of various vehicles and motorized equipment, telling a good yarn at the local watering hole, and fishing for walleye and perch. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed help with a project, small or large.
Don epitomized selflessness, dependability, kindness, determination, and loyalty. His life partner, Mary Lou, was always at his side, and they enjoyed spending time with family and their many good friends, for whom they always had a place at the table. Don adored his grandchildren, who knew him affectionately as Pops. Pops was always ready to build something, eat ice cream, and share a laugh. He leaves a legacy of family and friends, who will forever draw on his lessons, guidance, and love.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the HANNEMAN FUNERAL HOME, 201 Osborn Avenue, Findlay, Ohio 45840, with a service at 3:30 pm. Following the funeral service, a reception will be held from 4 to 6 pm at the Hancock Hotel, 631 South Main Street, Findlay, Ohio 45840. A celebration of Don's life will be held on Middle Bass Island at a later date.
You can honor Don by rolling up your sleeves and spending the day working hard and the evening surrounded by dear family and friends, enjoying laughs and good company. In lieu of flowers, you can donate to the Middle Bass Island Volunteer Fire Department by sending a check made payable to "MBIVFD" to MBIVFD, c/o John Schneider, General Delivery, Middle Bass Island, Ohio 43446.
