Barrington - Donald Gordon Stevens,89 known to many as Don, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Crestwood Nursing Home in Warren. He was born on November 27, 1936, in
Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and lived a long and meaningful life marked by service, devotion, and the quiet strength of a man who was deeply valued by those who knew him.
Don was the husband of the late Albina M. (Coelho) Stevens and the son of the late John A. and Caroline Elizabeth (Fernstrom) Stevens. He was also the longtime companion of Nancy Vanasse of Barrington. In addition, he was the stepfather of Karen Conley and her husband, Michael J. Conley, of Riverside, and the step grandfather of Brenton S. Conley. Family was an important part of Don's life, and he remained connected to those he loved with warmth, loyalty, and care.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Don carried the values of discipline, duty, and integrity throughout his life. He later served the Department of Defense as the deputy dean of the Naval War College in Newport, where he worked for many years. His career reflected both his intelligence and his commitment to public service, and he was respected for the professionalism and dedication he brought to his role. Those who worked with him knew him as a steady and thoughtful presence, someone whose judgment and character inspired confidence.
Don lived in Barrington for more than 33 years after moving there from East Providence. He appreciated the community and the life he built there, and he found joy in the simple pleasures that made his days full. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and golf, pastimes that gave him both relaxation and happiness. Whether he was spending time on the water, enjoying a quiet day outdoors, or sharing time with others, he embraced life with a calm and appreciative spirit.
He will be remembered as a kind, intelligent, and loving man. These qualities were evident in the way he treated others and in the lasting impression he left on family, friends, and colleagues. Don had a gentle manner and a thoughtful nature, and he was the kind of person who made others feel welcome and at ease. His presence brought comfort and steadiness, and his memory will remain a source of strength to those who knew him best.
Don's life was one of service, devotion, and enduring love. He leaves behind a legacy shaped by his military service, his career, his family ties, and the many relationships he built over the years. Though he is no longer with us, the memory of his character and the example of his life will continue to be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Funeral services are private.
