AUGUSTA - Donald Frank Stultz, 90, of Augusta, Maine, passed away on February 12, 2026.
Born June 14, 1935, in
Gardiner, Maine, he was the son of Frank M. Stultz and Eleanor M. (Davidson) Stultz. He grew up in central Maine and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1953. On November 10, 1962, he married the love of his life, Phyllis (Mansir) Stultz, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned more than six decades.
He often shared fond memories of his boyhood during the Great Depression, recalling adventures with his cousins, Paul Trask and Mike Murphy - stories filled with mischief, imagination, and the kind of freedom that defined a simpler time. Those early years shaped his resilience and resourcefulness, but just as importantly, they gave him a lifetime of stories he loved to retell, often with a twinkle in his eye and impeccable comedic timing.
Donald proudly served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Following his honorable discharge, he began his civilian career with Liberty Loan Company in Augusta. He later worked for the State of Maine Department of Transportation, Highway Division, before beginning what would become a 27-year career at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta. At the VA, he served as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor, dedicating himself to supporting veterans and their families.
Beyond his career, Donald was known for his larger-than-life personality. He possessed an incredibly sharp mind and a quick wit that stayed with him throughout his life. His humor, intelligence, and unmistakable presence made him beloved by anyone who knew him. To many, he was simply their "favorite old guy" - a title he earned naturally and carried proudly.
Family was the center of Donald's world. He followed the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren closely, always ready with a question, a story, or a bit of advice. Time together, especially outdoors, was what he valued most. Whether exploring Maine's landscapes or gathering along the coast, he found meaning in shared experiences. Popham Beach held special meaning for him; with the salt air, open sky, and familiar shoreline, it became the kind of place where stories unfolded effortlessly and connection came easily.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Mansir) Stultz, and by the family he treasured most: his children, Donald A. Stultz of Rockland, Maine, and his partner Deborah Ames; Karen (Stultz) Breton of New Port Richey, Florida, and her husband Glen Breton; and Mark L. Stultz of Waldoboro, Maine, and his wife Emily (Winter) Stultz.
He leaves behind his grandchildren, Donald J. Stultz; Danielle R. (Breton) Arbour and her husband Heath Arbour; Paul Breton; and Matthew Stultz; along with his two great-granddaughters, Ella Rose Arbour and Kinsley Rose Arbour, who brought him tremendous pride and joy.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Jill (Stultz) Ciriello, Marsha Stultz, Mary Ellen (Salewski) Abram, Lorraine (Salewski) Matos, Sally (Salewski) Jewell, Don Vellani, Steve Vellani, and Andy Vellani.
He was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Harrison Stultz, Lorraine (Stultz) Vellani, and Patricia (Stultz) Salewski; and his nephews, Harrison (Mickey) Stultz Jr., Frank Salewski, and Richard Salewski.
Donald will be remembered for the steady devotion he showed to those he loved, for the sharp wit that could brighten any room, and for the strength of character that defined his life. His presence was unmistakable, his stories well told, and his loyalty unwavering. His influence lives on in the family he shaped and, in the memories, they will continue to share.
A celebration of life is being held on February 22, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Gardiner Elks Lodge. All who knew him-family, friends, and neighbors-are welcome to join his family as they gather to honor and remember him.
Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue,
