Donald Thomas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Clawson on Oct. 9, 2025.
Donald James Thomas, 91, of Plymouth, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, surrounded by family.
Don was born on February 27, 1934, to William and Beatrice (Smith) Thomas in Detroit, Michigan. Don was the youngest of seven children and was preceded in death by siblings, Catherine Hemeyer, Mildred Hamlin, William Thomas, Marlyn Gilbert, Robert Thomas, and Earl Thomas.
Don's family moved frequently during his youth for his father's job, ultimately returning to Michigan to attend University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Saint Mary's of Redford. Following his graduation, Don joined the United States Army, serving with pride and distinction in Alexandria, Virginia, from February 1, 1957, to January 30, 1959. During this time, he was deeply honored to serve as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, a solemn and prestigious duty that reflected his dedication, discipline, and respect for those who served before him.
Don met the love of his life, Patsy Sexton, at a party in Detroit. They were married on August 9, 1958, and shared 67 beautiful years together before her passing earlier this summer. Together, they built a loving family, raising five children: Ann (Ed) Battersby, Tim (Mary Lynn) Thomas, Brian (Jane) Thomas, Mary (Thames) Fulton, and Colleen (Kevin) Dewan.
Don was a man of deep generosity. Whether it was the magic of Thanksgiving Day parades or pontoon boat rides around Tipsico Lake, he found joy in bringing people together. He was always ready with a listening ear and a warm smile. His sharp wit, kind heart, and sense of humor lit up every room and left lasting impressions on everyone he met. Above all, Don cherished his family, and his legacy of love, laughter, and togetherness will live on through them.
Don had a heart for entrepreneurship and made his living in the construction industry. He also wore his Catholic faith proudly as a member of Our Lady of Victory Church and as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Monaghan Council 2690. He was proud of his Welsh heritage and Celtic roots.
In addition to his children, Don is survived by his adored grandchildren: Helen (Josh) Carlisle, Brian (Colleen) Battersby, Ryan Thomas, Patty (Noah) Jacob, Austin (Bean) Thomas, Veronica (Johnny) Ebbing, Molly (Ethan) Slaughter, Will Fulton, Gabi Thomas, Ellie Thomas, Delia Fulton, Bridgette Thomas, Pat Dewan, Grace Dewan, Mary Dewan, and Rubye Fulton. Don also cherished his four great-grandchildren: Tony Carlisle, Maureen Battersby, Patrick Battersby, and Thomas Carlisle.
Visitation will take place on Sunday October 19, 2025, at Lynch & Sons in Clawson, 1368 N. Crooks Rd., Michigan, from 2 to 7 pm. Mass of the Resurrection will follow on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 133 Orchard Drive, Northville, Michigan. A brief visitation will take place prior to the service, beginning at 10 am until the service time at 11 am. Interment will be private at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.

I had the honor of being your caregiver, but in my heart, you were so much more than that. You were like parents to me-guiding lights, steady anchors, and gentle souls who filled my life with love, laughter, and wisdom.

Caring for you wasn´t a duty-it was a privilege. You allowed me into your lives during your most vulnerable moments, and I will always be grateful for the trust you gave me. Through the everyday routines, the quiet conversations, and even the hard days, I grew to love you like family-because that´s what you became.

Now that you're gone, the world feels a little quieter, a little less full. But I take comfort in knowing your legacy lives on-in the lessons you taught me, the strength you showed, and the love you gave so freely.

Thank you for letting me walk alongside you in your final chapters. I´ll carry your memory with me, always.

Rest peacefully. You were deeply loved.
