Donald VerSteeg, 91, Alamo, TX (formerly of Mitchell) passed away Tuesday November 4, 2025 at Knapp Medical Center, Weslaco, TX. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:30 prayer service, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Donald (Don) Elden VerSteeg was born on November 16, 1933 in Harrison, SD to Cornie and Allie (Brink) VerSteeg. Don attended school in Corsica, SD, graduating from Corsica High School in 1951. It was there he met his high school sweetheart, Arla Vanden Hoek. The young couple were united in marriage on May 21, 1953. Don and Arla were blessed with two children – David Wayne and Brenda Joy.

For over 45 years, Don worked in retail sales. He started out selling dairy products for Gate-City Sunshine in Upton, WY and finished his career with Metz Baking Company selling Old Home Bread.

Don enjoyed sports: golf, pool, and bowling. He also enjoyed time outdoors riding motorcycles and camping. On one adventure in 1989, Don and Arla drove all the way to Alaska with a pickup and a pickup camper. By 1993, they made their first trip to Texas with a 5th wheel camper. Ever on the go, Don and Arla celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Shortly after, Arla passed away.

Music was a great source of joy for Don, and he had a talent for singing. Throughout his entire life, Don shared his gifts by singing solos at church. He was one of the original members of the Power of Praise Quartet at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell, SD. Don also shared his love of music through participating in several barbershop quartets and choruses in both South Dakota and Texas.

On April 15, 2006, Don married Janelle Cole. They spent many years living in Alamo, TX during the winter and enjoying their summers in Mitchell. Eventually, they sold their home in South Dakota and became full-time Texans in 2016.

Don was a man that could connect with anyone. He had a quick wit, a kind soul, and a talent for listening that made those near him feel valued. He is dearly missed by friends and family.

Donald is survived by his wife of 19 years, Janelle; his son, David (Patricia) of Mitchell, SD; his daughter, Brenda Kaser of Lincoln, NE; three grandchildren: Catherine VerSteeg of Mitchell, John VerSteeg (Britney) of Volga, SD, and Jennifer Kaser of Omaha, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Arla. Sister-in-law Irene Vanden Hoek, and brother-in-law Lloyd Vanden Hoek.
