Donald was born on December 19, 1931, at his parents' home, Harold and Nellie (Bain) Visser, in Mahaska County, Iowa. He attended River Side Grade School and Oskaloosa High School. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Lucille McWilliams, at a 4-H meeting in 1948. They were married on March 5, 1950, at the United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa by the Rev. W.M. Scheuermann.
