Donald Zywicki Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory - Greenwood Chapel on Dec. 4, 2025.
With profound sadness and enduring gratitude, we remember Donald James Zywicki, a beloved husband, father, veteran, and friend, who passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by his loving family. A steadfast presence and gentle soul, he was the heart of his family. His life reflected hard work, devotion, and unwavering faith in the people and sports teams he loved.
A proud Chicagoan in spirit and heart, if not always in ZIP code, he measured the seasons by Opening Day at Wrigley and Sundays at Soldier Field. But Saturdays in the fall, they were reserved for Notre Dame football. His love for the Cubs and the Bears was a constant through every chapter of his life. No doubt they taught him to take disappointment in stride, find hope in the bleakest of times, and savor the wins. No win was savored more than the Cubs' World Series championship in 2016.
Unwavering dedication and loyalty defined every aspect of Don's life. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and later worked for International Harvester in Chicago, which later rebranded as Navistar International and led his family to relocate to Indianapolis. For nearly 44 years, Don dutifully worked on the assembly line, often putting in long hours and double shifts to support his family, because above all else, Don was a family man.
He was a devoted husband, sharing a love that spanned 54 years of marriage. He was a proud and deeply caring father. He taught not with speeches but by example, showing that strength can be calm, love can be steady, and presence is the greatest gift one can give. For him, family always included four legs and a wagging tail. Through the years, he cherished the companionship of each of his loyal dogs, who never failed to bring daily smiles and warm his lap as he offered friendly coaching advice to his beloved Chicago teams on the television from the comfort of his favorite recliner.
He found joy in simple pleasures, none more than a round of golf with good company. He was always chasing the perfect drive and had a devotion to the game that far outpaced his handicap. His game mirrored his outlook: patient, resilient, and always hopeful for the next great swing. Golf was not just a pastime for him but also a chance to connect with his friends and savor the good in each day.
Don will be deeply missed and forever remembered. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; their two children, Brian Zywicki and Amy Zywicki (with her spouse Matthew Russomano); his grandchildren, Paige and Andrew Zywicki; and his sister, Patricia Swierad. He also leaves behind his beloved golden retriever, Abbie.
Don's life reminds us that strength does not need to be loud to be profound, and that love, shown steadily and faithfully, is the most enduring legacy of all. In honoring his memory, we carry forward his love for family, his devotion to service, and that steadfast Chicago spirit-the kind that believes, no matter the odds, that next season might just be the one.
May he rest in peace. And may the fairways be straight, the putts fall true, and the Cubs always be up in the bottom of the ninth. Until we meet him again..."Go, Cubs, Go!"
In accordance with the family's wishes, a private memorial service will be held for immediate family only.
