She was born in Forestville California and attended Analy High School in Sebastopol, class of 1955. She and Jim married in 1956 at St. Sebastian Church in Sebastopol. She briefly worked in insurance in Santa Rosa before moving around with her husband to San Luis Obispo, Lynchberg, VA, San Jose,
Daytona Beach, FL and then to
Phoenix, AZ for 18 years, until in 1987 finally settling in
Portland, OR.
Doreen was an office manager for Honeywell Alarms in
Portland, OR when she retired.
Doreen loved gardening, cooking, reading, music, and professional baseball. She loved to watch the New York Yankees and she often kept score for herself during the games that she watched at home. Doreen and Jim traveled a lot after they both retired in 1993. They visited many places in the USA including the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, New York. They also went to Europe twice visiting France, Germany, Italy and Austria.
Her daughter Debbie remembers spending time canning tomatoes with her every year and also making raviolis from a recipe from her mother Eva. Doreen and Debbie would make enough raviolis for both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Doreen was also a great cookie maker. Debbie fondly remembers her anise biscotti cookies and her "from scratch" spaghetti sauce. Doreen also taught Debbie to read before she started kindergarten and she was an avid reader.
Her son Jim remembers that she was the team mother for his sports teams and was a great batting instructor. Baseball was one of her favorite things. Whenever she watched a game, she kept score, even if she was watching the game from home. Her favorite team was the New York Yankees. She was also a first class backseat driver and kept her son Jim in line when he was first learning to drive.
Her daughter Julie remembers that mom was her first softball coach and later on never missed one of her games no matter what else was going on. Doreen absolutely loved the holidays especially Christmas and she had an enormous amount of Christmas decorations including an entire Christmas town. When Julie's kids were born, mom was there and would wake up to check on the babies at all hours of the night. She was a proud grandma.
Mom was much more than a few words or paragraphs could describe, she was an absolutely amazing person. She cared deeply for her husband Jim, her children and grandchildren. Her life and memory will be cherished by us forever. We miss you mom.
