Doris H. Burkus
April 30, 1931-January 19, 2025
Doris H. Burkus, 93, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Sunday January 19, 2025, at Northwest Health in La Porte. She was born April 30, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, and was raised as a daughter by John W. Holdeman and Hazel (Bates) Holdeman.
On June 4, 1951, in Lawton, OK, she married the love of her life, A. George Burkus who preceded her in death. Doris was a member of Daughters of the Nile, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Ladies of Oriental Shrine, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years. Her most enjoyed pleasure during her life was sharing her love with her family. She also enjoyed gardening her flowers, photography, and was a major sports fan especially cheering for Notre Dame. She always had a song to sing for any occasion to make someone smile! She could make up a song for any occasion and loved making people laugh. No one was a stranger. Now she is with her Buddy enjoying her picnic (drinking root beer floats), singing the John Adams High School fight song with her “brother” Larry, and a laugh or two with her lady friends.
She is survived by her son, David (Bette) Burkus of VA and daughter, Karen (David) Frazier of La Porte, IN; five grandchildren: Gregory (Amanda) Alberding, Nicole Sukenick, Bryan Burkus, Karley (Kevin) Kinsey, Kate (Andrew) Kortz: six great-grandchildren, Alex, Garen, Ben, Nico, Lyla Rose, and Noah; and her ten extra blessings: Grace, Kolby, Christian, Kara, Weston, Delaney, Amelia, Silus, Caydan, and Kelsey.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lillian Thompson, and brother-in-law, Charles Thompson, and her brother-in-love, Larry Landy and Jinx.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, January 24 from 1 pm until 3 pm. A funeral service will be held at 3 pm, at Haverstock Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Coleman officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery. And her last words were "Go Irish"!
