Doris Evans Burton, longtime resident of New Bern, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the age of 89. Born on August 29, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas H. Evans and Mamie Haddock Evans. A member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Mrs. Doris was a woman of faith who served the Lord and who was devoted to her family. Upon retiring with 26 years in civil service at Cherry Point, Mrs. Doris continued to work and embarked on a second career as the switchboard supervisor at CarolinaEast Medical Center. She thoroughly enjoyed her work there and at the time of her passing she was the oldest full-time employee at CarolinaEast and had 35 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Frank A. Burton; two sisters, Ernestine Evans Crisp and Ruby Evans Gaskins; and one brother, Melton Evans. She is survived by her loving family, which includes one daughter, Dianne Ezell and husband David of New Bern; one grandson, Brian S. Ezell and wife Susan of New Bern; one brother, Thomas H. Evans, Jr. and wife Edna of Washington; and one sister, Vera Hayes and husband Bobby of Wilmington. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, September 10, 2012 at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Gleason officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Burton will be laid to rest with her husband at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
