Doris was a devoted supporter of St. Jude. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in her honor to the Doris Carbone Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Doris Gloria Carbone, 95, of Southampton, NY, passed away peacefully at home on February 18, 2023. Doris was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to Calabrian immigrants Alfredo and Antoinetta Vigorito on August 8, 1927. Sadly her father passed away in December of 1927 when Doris was only four months old. Doris, her sister and two brothers were raised in a small apartment by their hard-working mother whose fierce spirit and cooking prowess she certainly inherited. Doris was part of the first class to attend Fort Hamilton High School where she excelled in mathematics, which led her to later employment in the banking industry in Manhattan. She had a love and vast knowledge of Old Hollywood cinema, a passion that developed in many a Brooklyn picture house. Later she would go on to marry a tall, dark and handsome man who bore a striking resemblance to her favorite Hollywood actor, Tyrone Power.
That man, the love of her life, was Joseph Carbone. The meeting point of their first date was the clock at Grand Central Station. Unbeknownst to them, Doris was waiting at one clock, and Joe at another. They nearly missed what would turn into over 70 years of devoted love, but the universe had other plans. They bumped into each other as they were both leaving the station. And the rest is history.
Doris and Joe married in 1950 and raised their family in Pelham, NY until 1989 when they relocated permanently to Southampton. Although they were both retired by then, they quickly found jobs in the community, Doris at North Fork Bank in Sag Harbor, and Joe at Caldor in Bridgehampton. Doris reveled in her beach life with her beloved. Breakfasts on the pond, evening sunsets over the bay. She took great pride in her garden and her green thumb could resuscitate any of the family's plants.
Doris hosted countless holidays and family celebrations and loved nothing more than cooking Italian recipes for her family. Doris and Joe cultivated a wonderful group of friends who bowled weekly in East Hampton and spent many hours around the table debating and swapping stories. Doris was a storyteller extraordinaire.
Despite being barely tall enough to see over the podium, Doris was a popular lector at St. Andrews RC Church in Sag Harbor and was often complimented by parishioners for her clear and spirited proclamation of the Word, something in which she took great pride.
We will miss nights around the scrabble board, poker games, summer swims, bocce tournaments, dinners alfresco and karaoke nights, where Doris' star really shone. She was wise, sassy, and devoted. A family historian. A true matriarch. Our anchor and our angel.
Doris is survived by her two daughters, JoAnn and Catherine; Catherine's husband Rocco; five grandchildren and their spouses/partners: Jennifer and Anthony, Courtney and Julian, Stephanie and Joel, Melissa and Anthony, and Michael; and great-granddaughters, Olivia and Lucia. She was preceded in death by her dear husband of 70 years Joseph Carbone, brothers George and Alfredo, sister Florence and son, Robert, who died shortly after birth.
Viewing will be held Thursday February 23, 3-6pm, Brockett Funeral Home, Southampton, NY. Funeral mass will be held Friday, February 24, 11am, St. Andrew's RC Church, Sag Harbor, NY. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.

Sally, Dan, Juliana and I send our deepest sympathies. My memories of Aunt Doris began with car rides to Pelham as a child for great dinners and continued as she took care of me with food and shelter through law school. A great woman in so many ways from the Greatest Generation.
