Doris Mathews Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations - La Grange on Oct. 23, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Doris (Killingsworth) Mathews was called home by the Lord just one week shy of her 92nd birthday on October 21, 2025 in La Grange, Texas after a long, loving, and altruistic life devoted to her family, friends, and her community. Doris was born in Longview, TX on October 28, 1933 to Thomas Boyd Killingsworth and Clyda Heitt Killingsworth.
From the earliest years of her life, her hardworking nature, religious devotion, and her willingness to help others was evident in everything she pursued.
After graduating from Longview High School with the class of 1950, Doris went on to study at Kilgore College where she achieved a secretarial degree that gave her the skills to eventually become a very successful businesswoman.
She met the love of her life, Carl Mathews in late 1958, and a wonderful, whirlwind of a romance brought the two together in holy matrimony in February 1959. Doris and Carl spent every moment possible alongside one another. The couple traveled the world together and embraced the immense beauty of history, nature, and life as one.
The pair eventually settled down together in the country, where they raised two well rounded sons, built a beautiful home, and established a successful small business.
Doris devoted her entire life to the Lord and took every opportunity imaginable to spread the word of Christ – both inside her church and out. Her beautiful choir voice filled the stone walls of the chapel and her free time was selflessly spent helping others around her. This worldly woman of grace became a pillar of faith for her family, friends, and community. She was an avid historian and a sentimental soul who was passionate about studying and documenting generations of family and local history.
The world was her sanctuary. Doris was able to find the beauty in everything around her. She had a profound appreciation for wildlife and enjoyed spending time outside rejoicing in the birds' blissful songs, cultivating lush gardens, and even treasured the deer as they devoured her hard work. She especially cherished the sunsets, or God's paintings- as she referred to them- and considered herself fortunate to be able to experience and embrace all of His gifts.
Doris is preceded in death by her late, loving husband Carl and she is survived by her two sons - Glyn and Michael Mathews, granddaughter – Lyndsay Mathews, and two great grandsons – Luke and Logan.
Although she is no longer physically with us, her spirit will live on forever - embodied in her family, friends, and the countless lives of everyone she touched.
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." – Revelation 21:4
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2025 from 11:00AM - 6:00PM at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations in La Grange, Texas. Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2025 from 10:00AM - 11:00AM at New Life Methodist Church of La Grange. A reception will follow after she is laid to rest next to her lifelong companion at the Fayetteville City Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to New Life Methodist Church or the Fayette Public Library Museum.
