Doris Churchwell McMahon, long-time resident of Crestview, FL, passed away September 21, 2024 at the age of 92. Born in Lockhart, AL, Doris moved to Crestview as a child following the death of her father. She graduated from the University of West Florida and taught at Bob Sikes and Northwood Elementary Schools for over 35 years. Doris leaves a lasting legacy through the generations she touched as a much-loved teacher, colleague, and friend. She was also recognized for her teaching excellence and devotion to the church.
Doris was a life-long member of the First Methodist Church of Crestview, where she met her husband, John, sang in the choir, played handbells, and served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years.
Faith and family sustained Doris. She was preceded in death by her parents William Jackson and Mae Campbell Churchwell, brothers; William Eugene and Harold Churchwell; her husband of 61 years, John McMahon; sons James and Steve McMahon and many dear friends. Doris is survived by her daughter Laura (Eddy) Pitts; daughter-in-law Lissa McMahon (Bill) Dunn; grandchildren Danielle (Chris) Day, Andrew (Kendra) McMahon, and Curtis Pitts; great-grandchildren Lindsay and Brendan Day; Jack and Molly McMahon.
The family will receive friends at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home in Crestview on Thursday, October 3rd from 5-7 p.m. A celebration of Doris' life will take place at 2 p.m. Friday October 4th at First Methodist Church of Crestview. Following services, burial will be at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery. Flowers are welcome, or friends who wish may contribute to First Methodist Church in Doris's memory.
