Doris (Darcy) Ann Mozer passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in
Baltimore, Maryland, surrounded by her family.
Born in Baltimore in 1929, Darcy developed a passion for literature, classical music, opera, and the arts at an early age. She later became a Shakespearean scholar at the Folger Library in
Washington, DC, and taught English at New Mexico State University and the University of Maryland, where she created a writer's center and innovative methods that helped students to write clearly and effectively. An accomplished writer of plays, poetry, children's books and a novel, Darcy had multiple books of poetry published by Sibyl-Child Press, including her favorite, The Quickest Promise Home. She loved animals and over her lifetime provided a happy home to many cats, dogs and a Shetland pony named Dusty.
As a girl, Darcy spent her summers at her grandparents' farm in Severn, Maryland, and their cabin on the Magothy River, remembering them vividly as happy and magical places. She also loved living in Mesilla and Las Cruces, New Mexico, where she was a big supporter of the local theatre. In Historic New Castle, Delaware, Darcy was a mainstay of a community rich with history and served as a docent at the nearby Hagley Museum. She also loved to travel, exploring and embracing cultures from around the world.
Darcy was married to Ralph Wooten in 1949 and Chuck Mozer in 1969. She is survived by her children Stephen Wooten, Judi Romeo, Kim Wooten, Laura Wieder and John Wooten; her brother Charles Ross Werner; her son-in-law Bob Wieder; her daughters -in- law Beth Wooten and Andrea Bianchi Wooten; and many devoted grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family will be having a private service for Darcy. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Darcy's name to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS).
here
in your poet's cell
where firelight gilds
a thousand arguments
for poetry, I have
taken some comfort
before I sleep.
