Doris P. (Brooks) Groen

The Kingston community mourns the loss of Doris P. (Brooks) Groen, who passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2025, at 4:30 p.m., surrounded by her family and with the care of a hospice nurse. She was 87 years old.

Doris lived a full and joyful life. She was born in Danville, Virginia, and as a young woman attended East Carolina University. She was also proud to have held the title of Mrs. North Carolina. In the mid-1970s and early 1980s, she owned a catering business which she dearly loved - cooking and catering weddings, parties, and special events. She enjoyed snow skiing, visiting the beach, traveling with her husband, keeping up with classmates, and spending time with her beloved dog, Skipper.

Her overseas travels included Austria, Scotland, and the Azores, Portugal, where she visited her son, Chuck, and his family during their Air Force assignment. Most recently, she returned from Alaska with her husband, Arie, and daughter, Michelle, where she attended her great-granddaughter's college graduation.

She is survived by her husband, Arie Groen of Kingston; her three children, Michelle Adcock (Paddy) of Bowling Green, Kentucky; Chuck Brooks (Debbie) of Grayson, Georgia; and Lisa (Brooks) Salmon of Santa Monica, California; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, James S. Parker, her mother, Ruby Forbes Parker Core, and her brothers, James Forbes "Bud" Parker and William Sidney "Billy" Parker.

Doris will be remembered for her warmth, laughter, adventurous spirit and the love she gave so freely.

Framma Doris, you were and are so loved. We will all miss you so much. Your infectious enthusiasm for life, family, friends, and food was unmatched. It was impossible not to have a good time when you were around. I will always remember and appreciate all the family reunions, Christmas and New Years celebrations, special trips to visit us at important moments in our lives or just for fun, and all the memories and stories you would share. Thank you for your hard work and dedication to researching and documenting our connections to our ancestry in Scotland, and also for your passion for Southern-ness and Confederate state history. It is an essential part of the identity of the man I am today. I am so sad that we will never be able to spend another Christmas with you or share another meal together. I love you so much Framma and I wish you were still here with us. I pray that in God's loving arms you are feeling all the warmth and joy and wholesomeness that you gave to all of us. Goodbye.

I was so sorry to hear this news. I remember Doris being so spunky and always a lot of fun at the Forbes family reunions. My dad (Alan, who passed away earlier this year) was very fond of her. Sending love and condolences to the whole family.

Praying for comfort for the family during this time. Cousin Michelle thank you so much for all the updates the last few months it is very appreciated so we could share with our family. We have prayed for a much better outcome but God is in control and wanted her to be with him so find comfort in knowing she is at peace and resting with no pain anymore.
