Doris Eleanor Miller Quarles, 88, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed on and was received by Jesus with open arms on August 24, 2025. Doris was born in Keyser, West Virginia, on February 12, 1937, Doris lived most of her life in the Daleville area of Botetourt County, VA. She was the daughter of the late John Curtis Miller, and the late Dorothy Vivian Ikenberry Miller.
She is survived by four children and their spouses: Sharon and Donald Hilliard, Durham, NC; Tamera and Tony Kelly, Fincastle, VA; James Carson II and Wendy Quarles, Roanoke, VA; and Deborah and Scott Seidel, Fairfax, VA.
Known as Grandma D., Grandma Doris, and "Greatma", she is survived by nine grandchildren: Elizabeth and Charlie McMillan, and Alan Hilliard; Tyler and Erika Kelly, Kendyl Kelly and fiance Conner Herbison; Jack and Paige Quarles, Maggie Quarles and fiance Tyler Haiges; Sarah Beth Seidel, Hannah Seidel, and Drew Seidel. She was blessed to have four great grandchildren, James and Henry McMillan; and Elowyn and Tolson Kelly.
Doris dedicated her life to the service of others, and to Jesus Christ. She was a home economics teacher at Lord Botetourt High School in her early career. She patiently and thoroughly worked in the home and raised her family as a loving parent and homemaker. She served her local church, Daleville Church of the Brethren as a volunteer choir director, organist, pianist, Sunday School teacher, and church board member and chairperson for many years. She volunteered throughout her life at her beloved Camp Bethel in Fincastle, Virginia. Doris started a new career in the mid 1980s, serving as the Virlina District Associate Executive for the Church of the Brethren. She supported the ministry of individual congregations of the Church of the Brethren throughout southwest Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
Doris was known by her family and friends to have a full, infectious laugh that pulled everyone around her into the joy of the moment. She was a steadfast advocate of those who were in need, and generous beyond reason. She loved her family fiercely, and cherished the times when she could visit with them. She loved to read and tell stories in exquisite detail. Doris was always creative, enjoying crafting, coloring intricate designs, and scrapbooking with her friends.
Early in life she was a basketball player and never lost the love of watching basketball on the television. March Madness was a favorite season for her. In the final years of her life, Doris continued her ministry to her friends and neighbors serving on the residential advisory councils at Cave Spring Place Assisted Living, and Friendship South Health & Rehab Center. She also led weekly Bible studies for her co-residents– advent being her favorite season for study.
She goes on to her blessed place in heaven having lived a full and loving life, knowing that she left behind a family that will carry on her life lessons of love, service, and joyful living.
