Doris M. Reeves Shadrix, age 99, passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
She was born to Jack and Ione Smith Reeves on July 3, 1926. She was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Gray Atcheson and her brother, Jarvis Fred Reeves. She married H. Lawrence Shadrix on March 22, 1946. They were married for 57 years. They had two children, James Michael Shadrix and Deborah Shadrix; two grandchildren, Leslie Shadrix Buterbaugh and Allison Leigh Shadrix; great grandchildren, Taylor Buterbaugh, Ryan Buterbaugh, Brandon Buterbaugh, great great grandchildren, Savannah, Teigen, Griffin and Lydia; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a devout Christian and enjoyed serving her church, Shady Grove Baptist Church until she was unable to attend regularly. Family was very important to her and she supported them any way she could.
She began working with "Hap" Horton in 1946 and in 1968 he made her a partner. At the time of his death, she became sole owner of Horton's Book Store in 1969. She served the public until 1988 when she retired. She developed many friendships after retiring from her "Canasta friends" to her neighborhood friends. She enjoyed all of them.
She was known for her famous fried apple pies and gave many of them away. She was a notorious joke teller, remembering every line, laughing all the while telling them. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling with Audie and Albert Holcombe, JT & Ethel Smith and Bonnie and Ralph Shadrix. They were all very close. She always said she was lucky to have been accepted into the Shadrix family as family too. Many fun times were had at holidays, Halloween and Christmas Eve were her favorites.
Mother, you will be so missed but we know you have gone on to a better place to reunite with daddy, Audie, Albert, JT, Ethel, Bonnie, Ralph, Linda and Jarvis. We are glad you are no longer in pain and healed.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at 3 PM from the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Harris officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until the service hour.
Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shady Grove Baptist Church, 1293 Sandhill Shady Grove Rd, Carrollton, GA 30116.
