Doris Sholund Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grimes Funeral Chapels - Kerrville on Feb. 9, 2026.
Doris Jean ''D.J.'' Sholund passed away on February 5, 2026, at the age of 82 in Kerrville, Texas, in her favorite chair, with a Dr Pepper (with good ice) nearby and QVC on the television.

There is now one less PT Cruiser making its daily circuit from Walmart to Hobby Lobby to Notre Dame. QVC will likely experience an overstock of shoes and Susan Graver blouses, and Sonic may not know what to do with its surplus of ice.

D.J. was friendly, sassy, a little bossy, and deeply loving. She is survived by her daughters, Lana Rutherford (Chuck) and Valerie Manns (Dave); her grandchildren Reece, Ryder, Morgan, and Matthew; her great-grandson Zaelor; her sisters Bess and Barbara Barecky; and her brothers August and Jeff Barecky. She was preceded in death by her father August ''Gus'' Barecky, her mother Bessie Barecky, and her brother Dennis Barecky.

Doris Jean Barecky was born on August 1, 1943, in Shiner, Texas. Her family later moved to the Texas Hill Country, spending time in Medina before settling in Kerrville, where she graduated from Tivy High School.

In 1963, she married Ralph Wynn, and they lived in San Antonio and Houston. During their fourteen-year marriage, they welcomed two daughters, whom she dressed like matching dolls, kept busy with crafts, and fed from nearly every recipe in the Campbell's Soup and Betty Crocker cookbooks.

From an artistic family, she was an avid crafter and painter. Her landscapes revealed that she was never truly a city girl; her heart belonged to sunsets over pastures and rivers.

After returning to Kerrville, she later married and divorced Bob Sholund.

D.J. worked for more than twenty-six years as an abstractor for the Kerr County Appraisal District. Chatty and personable, she loved meeting people and had a gift for making an ordinary day brighter.

A devout Catholic, she was a parishioner at Notre Dame Catholic Church, where she deepened her faith, completed RCIA as a revert to the Church, and served for years on the hospitality committee.

She was a treasured mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her reassuring smile was a steady light to her family, who never doubted they were loved. Her hugs felt like home, and her laughter filled every room. She believed family time should be real time: sitting around the table playing Yahtzee or Uno, working puzzles, talking for hours, and baking her beloved shortbread cookies every Christmas.

Her family will watch for cardinals, listen for wind chimes, and feel her love around them.

The Funeral Mass will be held Monday, February 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville, Texas, with Bishop Mike Boulette presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Notre Dame.

She will be laid to rest in Medina, near the river where five generations of her family have played. They will continue to bring their children and grandchildren there to wade in the water, stack limestone rocks, visit her, and, of course, bring the good ice.

May she be welcomed into the loving embrace of her Lord.
