Dorothy Allcox was welcomed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on April 6, 2025. Dorothy was born on April 3, 1929, to George and Martha (Vander Heiden) Smits along with her twin brother Donald.
Growing up, Dorothy was faced with the challenges of Cancer and for ten years spent most of her summers in a Madison hospital. In High School, she fell in love with the love of her life Tom. During Tom's four years of military service, she never lost touch with him and wrote him every day. Upon his return from duty in Korea, they were married on June 28, 1952.
Dorothy was a member of St. Margaret Mary's parish and a charter member of St. Gabriel's Church. Along with her husband, they organized a cub scout Pack at St. Gabriel's where she served as a Den mother and Den Leader Coach for 25 years. She served 15 years on the Catholic Scout Committee for the Green Bay Diocese and was the first woman in the Diocese to receive the St. George Award, the highest award in Catholic Scouting and the St. Anne Medal in Girl Scouting.
Dorothy and her husband Tom served as facilitators for CFM and Renew groups for St. Gabriel's Catholic Church. For several years, they worked with young couples to understand their faith as they prepared for marriage. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister
Dorothy served on St. Mary's School board and was a great supporter to the Forensic Program. Her community involvement included the Breakfast Optimist club of Neenah-Menasha where she organized several Oratorical Contests and held offices of Secretary, Treasurer and President. She was a Lt. Governor for the Wisconsin District in 1992-93 and was named Optimist of the Year in 1992 and 1997 by the Club. She was a Life Member for the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary De Pere Post 2113.
She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas, son Dan and Granddaughter Delanie. Her parents, George and Martha Smits, brothers George Jr, Henry, Robert, Jerome, Richard, Ken and twin brother Donald; Sisters Bert Kaczmierczak and Marie Albers, Brothers- in-law George Allcox, Don Baeten, Tom Kaczmierczak, Sam Albers, Cliff Hannon and Francis Derouin; Sisters- in- law Mary Lou, Phyllis, and Ruth Smits, Mary Ann Derouin, Florence Hannon, Helen Allcox, Charlotte Verheyen and several nieces and nephews.
Survivors include daughter in-law Julie Allcox, (Dan's wife), sons Pete (Cindy), Tom (Rose), Ken (Sandy), Dick (Cathy), Kevin (Lori) and Mike (Amy); 16 Grandchildren, 23 Great grandchildren, and 1 Great Great Grandchild; her Sister Mary Jane (Don) Van Remortal, Brother Clayton (Rose) Smits, Sisters- In-law Joan, Barbara and Sally Smits, Sue Allcox and Lee Verheyen.
Mom's life has been a wonderful testimony to the person she chose to become. She leaves us with our hearts filled with her love and her smile tucked away in each of our hearts. The family would like to thank the staff of Valley VNA Senior care for the care and compassion extended to mom and the family during her time with them.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday April 12, 2025 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger St., Neenah with Fr. Bob Kollath officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Private entombment will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Allouez. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
