Dorothy Davis Grandy, 88, of Grandy, NC died Friday, October 14, 2022 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born in Currituck, NC on February 10, 1934 to the late William B. Davis and Julia Morse Davis and was the widow of her high school sweetheart, Colon Waden Grandy, Sr. She was owner and operator of the Rose Tree Gift Shop at her family's Grandy Greenhouse and Farm Market in Grandy. She and her husband together ran the Caroland Hunting and Fishing Lodge from 1957 to 1992 while raising her two sons and taking care of her parents and grandmother. Dorothy and several local ladies would begin each morning at 3:30 a.m. preparing large breakfasts for up to 14 guests and then pack their lunches with thermoses full of coffee, tea, soup, or hot chocolate, ham sandwiches and scratch-made apple cake. While the guides escorted the guests, Dorothy and the ladies would wash dishes, clean the lodge and make the beds, before preparing true southern comfort dinners for the guests. It is said that hunting and fishing seemed to take a backseat to the food and hospitality the guests experienced. Dorothy and Colon remained friends with many guests outside of the lodge.
She is survived by her son, Colon Waden Grandy, Jr and wife, Allie, and William Grandy and wife, Julie, and their daughter, the only grandchild, Amanda Grandy. Along with her husband and parents, she is predeceased by two sisters, Vera Duncan and Jean Creech; and two brothers, Richard Davis and Winfred Davis.
A private family graveside service was held at Morse Family Cemetery, 163 Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC with Brother Jim Hogan officiating. Twiford Funeral Homes, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 is serving the Grandy family. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.TwifordFH.com.
