IN LOVING MEMORY

Dorothy Angelina Hanno

June 2, 1926 – May 22, 2025

Dorothy Angelina Hanno was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 2, 1926, to Italian immigrants Rachel DeSalvo Buoniconto and Frank Buoniconto, Sr. She attended Bay Ridge High School, an all-girls institution where she excelled in business and art. Following graduation, she worked at Dun and Bradstreet, and during the war was an air raid warden and member of the Girls Service Organization (GSO). Dorothy later moved to Cairo, New York, to be with her family and took a job at the Cairo Diner. It was there that she met Paul, the love of her life, who was hauling milk into New York City. They married on April 23, 1949.

On May 22, 2025, after almost 99 years on this Earth, Dorothy passed away. She was predeceased by her husband Paul in 1999, her son Bruce in 2009, and her daughter-in-law Nancy Widrick Hanno in 2025. She was predeceased by siblings Mary Benedetto, Helen Ranieri, and Frank Buoniconto, Jr. She is survived by seven children--Robert (Mary Lou), Paula Nickerson, Barbara Harris (David), Pamela Hanno, Mary Schilling (Carl), Michael Hanno, and Angela Votta (David). Dorothy also leaves behind ten grandchildren--Lucas Nickerson, Lindsay Nickerson, Kelsey Witkiewicz, Thomas Hanno, Amos Parry, Ben Schilling, Jared Campbell, Kellie Hanno, Matthew Widrick, and Nicholas Widrick; as well as eleven great grandchildren. She has a surviving brother Richard Buoniconto (Marlene) and brother-in-law Thomas Hanno.

Dorothy's most significant accomplishment was raising eight children in Lowville, whom she held as her pride and joy. With her husband Paul, they ran Paul's Restaurant, the Windsor Hotel, and a Surge dairy business in Lowville. Dorothy was active in St. Theresa's Guild at St. Peter's Catholic Church, and she was a 4-H leader-where she shared her skills as a great cook and talented seamstress. Paul and Dorothy moved to Cassville, New York, in 1978 to raise veal calves and in 1994 retired to Cape Coral, Florida. Dorothy and Paul took pleasure in an active social life and enjoyed traveling.

A calling hour for family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 19 from 10 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lowville. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Old Glendale Cemetery in Glenfield. Family and friends are invited to the Lowville Elks Lodge for a luncheon at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate Dorothy's life.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lowville Fire Department or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
