Dorothy May Lubitz (née Simon) passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on May 31, 2024. She had been married to her wonderful husband Karl B. Lubitz for 74 amazing years until his passing in August 2022. Their mutual love and support clearly contributed to their long and happy lives.
She is lovingly remembered as a dedicated and caring mother by her four sons and their wives: Harry (Jane) Lubitz of Delray Beach, FL; Allan (Robin) Lubitz of Belmont Shore, CA; Robert (Judith Monroe) Lubitz of Atlanta, GA; and Craig (Rhonda) Lubitz of Atlanta, GA. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Jon (Emily), Alex, Kelley, Steven, and Levi in Atlanta, GA and Kyle (fiancée Stephanie) and Erin in Los Angeles.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the third child of Alvin and Rose (née Figler) Simon. She was born into the Great Depression and had to overcome several serious challenges. But Dorothy preferred to focus on her positive memories and shared many wonderful stories about her childhood adventures. She enjoyed school, singing, playing the cello, and taking streetcars to see movies. She was very fond of her brother Gerald Simon and sister Shirley Becker who passed away in 2005 and 2008.
She attended The Ohio State University to study music. It was there that she met her husband, Karl. He had recently been discharged from the army after serving in World War II's Asia Pacific Theater and receiving several medals including two purple hearts. She fell in love with him, and after a short courtship, they married in 1948 when she was just 20 years old. She took several jobs while Karl finished Optometry school, then they moved back to Cleveland.
A family of four boys soon followed. They made an idyllic life for the family, first in Parma Heights, then in Seven Hills, Ohio. She ensured that her kids received an excellent education along with involvement in diverse activities including music, sports, scouting, religious studies, and other interests. Dorothy managed the office for Karl's Optometry practice for 49 years. She also was a teacher, community leader, and volunteer, especially loving to usher at musicals and other performances.
She and Karl relocated to Delray Beach, FL in 2000 and enjoyed a happy retirement in the Vizcaya community for 18 years. It was a time filled with family visits, world travel, volunteering, and many other activities. They subsequently relocated to Verena, also in Delray Beach.
Dorothy's long life was filled with love, family, friends, and activities. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. We remember her beautiful singing voice and love of music she was always humming or whistling a tune. She enjoyed watching old movies and was fond of nature, in particular butterflies. She was an avid puzzle solver, game player, fiction reader, and devotee of sports, especially Ohio State football and their marching band.
We celebrate her life and cherish our memories of her. Her spirit lives on in everyone she has touched with her kindness.
Services will be held at Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, 11115 Jog Road, Boynton Beach, FL on Friday 6/14/2024 at 9am. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at the South Florida National Cemetery at 10:30am (Lane #1).
