Robert Martin Lubitz, M.D. MPH, 62, passed away on January 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service and dedication to his family, friends, colleagues, students and patients. He was born July 10, 1962, in Parma, OH, to the late Karl Lubitz and Dorothy (née Simon) Lubitz. Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Judy Monroe, MD; his loving sons Jon (Emily) and Alex; daughter, Kelley; grandson Hayes; brothers Harry (Jane), Allan (Robin), Craig (Rhonda); and other family members.
Bob was a graduate of Normandy High School, in Parma where he was active in sports, music and most notably scouting, achieving Eagle Scout. He attended The Ohio State University and excelled in men's shot put before entering medical school at the University of Cincinnati where he met the love of his life, Judy. The two had an early date hiking on the Appalachian Trail where they happened upon an older couple, and the man was in cardiac arrest. Bob and Judy revived him and worked with medics to get him evacuated by air to a hospital. The note of gratitude from his wife was a key sign Bob and Judy were meant to be a team.
Bob completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee, a fellowship at the Regenstreif Institute at Indiana University School of Medicine and served as a member of the teaching faculty. In 1996, he joined St. Vincent Hospitals and Healthcare Centers and Ascension Health where he spent nearly 17 years in leadership positions spanning graduate medical education, research and hospital administration, becoming Vice President in 2005. He served as the Governor for the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians and received numerous teaching awards and accolades for his work during these years.
In 2012, Bob was appointed Vice President, Medical Affairs, System Lead, Quality and Safety at Wellstar Health System in Marietta, GA. In January 2014 he received the status of Master of the American College of Physicians. He retired in 2018 to pursue interests in consulting with multi-hospital systems across the United States as Principal with Progressive Healthcare Inc. and as Chief Medical Officer at medical device start-up, 3Oe Scientific.
Bob was a man of many passions, and his life was marked by his unwavering commitment to those he loved. Above all, he adored his children. He spent countless hours coaching their sports teams, actively participating in their music and scouting experiences, chaperoning both local and international trips and witnessing their achievements with the pride of a father who cherished every moment. He was well known as the "cheer dad" for the marching band and his hilarious weekly newsletters to the parents about each week's events.
His love for his family extended to his beloved wife, Judy, with whom he shared an enduring and adventurous marriage. Together, they traveled the world, exploring new cultures, experiencing the beauty of nature, and savoring the joy of each other's company. They built a life rich with memories, from their quiet moments to their grand adventures with family and friends.
Bob was a man who found peace in nature, and his love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies. Whether kayaking on a serene lake, hiking through rugged trails, or enjoying a round of golf, Bob found joy in the world around him and inspired those around him to live life to its fullest.
Bob's kindness, generosity and sense of humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was a mentor to many, a confidant to his friends and a steady presence for his family. His ability to balance a demanding career with a love for life and his commitment to those closest to him was truly remarkable.
