Dorothy Neelley

Dorothy Lee Self Neelley went to be with the Lord on August 7, 2023 at the age of 103. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 51 years, Gordon W. Neelley, Sr.; her daughter, Dorothy Ann Neelley Steinle; her second husband, John Henry Kavanaugh; her sister, Louise; and brother, Marvin Self, Jr.; as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Dorothy was born on August 1, 1920 in Waco, Texas to Edith Lillian Self and Marvin Victor Self. In 1937, they moved to Austin, Texas. Dorothy graduated from Austin High School in 1939. She met her first husband at the Checker Front Grocery Store at 12th & Lamar. They had a daughter, Dorothy Ann, in 1941, and a son, Gordon Neelley, Jr. in 1943.
Dorothy spent most of her life being a wonderful stay-at-home mother -- no one could be blessed with a better mother than she was. She was active in and supported her church, the University Methodist Church, and the couples class group, as well as the Kiwanis Club, where she made many lifelong friends.
She is survived by her son, Gordon Neelley, Jr.; her grandchildren: John Steinle IV, Elaine Steinle Gardner, Terri Steinle Parks, Natalie Neelley Hefner, Kimberly Neelley Stephens; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service for Dorothy will be held Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752.
Serving as pallbearers are Justin Cole Thomas, Jason Hefner, Justin Stephens, Joel Parks, John Steinle and Steve Gardner.
