Dorothy Williams Atkins Nix

Dorothy Williams Atkins Nix, 88, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Sunday, October 3, 2010, at The Cedars.

Born in Giles County, Virginia, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Leonard Buford Williams and Naomi Stafford Williams. She was predeceased in death by her husbands, John M. Atkins Sr. and Earl R. Nix.

"Dot" had lived in Charlottesville for over 50 years. She was a consummate gardener and seamstress, and wonderful mother who enjoyed cooking for her family.

Dorothy served in the United States Navy as a Wave during World War II, graduated from Radford State Teacher's College, received her Master's Degree from The University of Virginia, and retired as a Physical Science teacher from Albemarle High School.

Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her son John M. Atkins Jr. of Charlottesville; two granddaughters, Joannah Brooke Atkins of Waynesboro, Virginia, and Kelly Elizabeth Atkins Charles and her husband, Jason; and a great- granddaughter, Daphne Alexandra Charles, all of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; and five stepchildren, Kathleen A. Gray of Huntingtown, Maryland, John D. Nix, Craig E. Nix, Cynthia J. Zent, and William S. Nix, all of Fort Wayne, Inidiana. Also, Dorothy is survived by two brothers and four sisters, Leonard Buford Williams Jr., Roland Williams, Julia Ellen Stafford, Mozelle Stafford, and Estelle Butts, all of Virginia, and Mary Williams of South Carolina.

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, family and friends will be received at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia, one half hour prior to the service at 11 a.m. The Reverend Gavin D. Meek of The First Presbyterian Church, in Charlottesville, will be officiating.

The members and supporters of the Albemarle High School Alumni Association were very sorry to hear about Mrs. Nix's passing. It is always sad to lose a member of the Albemarle family, and we offer our condolences to her family and friends.
