Dorothy Jean Smith, 97, of Unionville, Iowa, passed away on October 4, 2025 at the MercyOne Long Term Care in Centerville. She was born on September 20, 1928, in Appanoose County, Iowa, to Raymond and Lavona (Robb) Lockman.
Dorothy Jean graduated from Moravia High School in 1946. On September 4, 1948, she was united in marriage to Joe Smith. They shared 66 wonderful years together before Joe's passing in 2015.
Dorothy Jean was a devoted homemaker who found great joy in caring for her family. She was an excellent cook, loved gardening, canning, and tending to her flowers. She had a fondness for the color red, enjoyed traveling, and always put her family first.
Dorothy Jean was a member of the IBSU Club for more than 50 years, treasurer of the Taylor Cemetery, and active with the Unionville Celebration Committee. Many will remember her humor and yodeling at the "Hee Haw" shows in Unionville.
Dorothy Jean is survived by her children, Beverly Babbitt of Unionville, IA, Sandy Snow of Unionville, IA, and Billy Joe (Crystal) Smith of Centerville, IA; along with her grandchildren, Micki, Shane (Spud), Jamie, Joey, Jason, Traci, Travis, Shane, Brandy, and Darrick; 28 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; son Larry Smith; sister, Maxine Burdock; brother, Billy Lockman; son-in-law, Robert Babbitt; and grandson-in-law, Donnie Hedgecock.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Wednesday, October 8th, 2025 at Thomas Funeral Home in Moravia with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Taylor Cemetery, east of Unionville, Iowa. A visitation will begin at 10:00AM on Wednesday at the funeral home in Moravia until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made out to the Taylor Cemetery, and may be mailed to Thomas Funeral Home, ATTN: Smith Family, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
