Dorothy Jeanne Katzman-Wheat, 92,
St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Dorothy was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph Katzman and Elsie (Shields) Katzman on November 23, 1932 and had two brothers Eddie Gosset and Robert Katzman, and two sisters, Becky (Fosberg) and Betty (Weller) which all preceded her in death.
She married Floyd A. Wheat, Jr. on September 2, 1951 in Independence, Missouri and he proceeded her in death on August 1, 2021 after almost 70 years of marriage. They had one son Mark Alan Wheat which preceded them in death and is survived by daughter and son-in-law Lori and Paul White and a total of 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Dorothy graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa in 1951 where she met her husband Floyd A. Wheat, Jr. After marrying September 2, 1951 she moved from Independence, Missouri and made her home in
St. Joseph, Missouri and they began building a new home in 1957.
Dorothy earned a Cosmetology license in 1965 and opened a beauty shop which Floyd later moved to their home and she continued to cut and style hair for family and friends for many years.
When Floyd started his own Tax and Accounting business Dorothy worked alongside him in the office.
Dorothy learned to knit from a church friend and continued enjoying that for most of her life and is known for knitting personalized Christmas stockings as baby shower gifts, for family and friends having knitted perhaps hundred or more and also knitted many sweaters, coats, dresses, Christmas tree skirts, etc. and as well as numerous other hand crafts.
She was ordained an Elder in January 1995 in the Community of Christ Church at the Abundant Life Center.
