Frederick Hiram Pryor, Jr., 91, passed away on November 9, 2025, of pneumonia, in De Soto, Kansas. He was born on June 6, 1934, in Harrison Co., near Gilman City, Missouri, to Celia Margaret (Welden) and Frederick Hiram Pryor, Sr. Fred led a life filled with commitment to his career, military service, and the joys he cherished in his personal pursuits.

His education was grounded in a strong foundation, graduating from Gilman City High School before attending Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. A proud veteran, Fred served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 aboard the USS Competent following the year that the Korean Conflict ended. His service was marked by honor, as he received several commendations including the Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

Fred had a distinguished 28-year career as a social worker for the State of Kansas, focusing on the department of Probation and Parole. Prior to this meaningful service, he worked at Hallmark Cards.

In his personal life, Fred enjoyed a variety of interests that brought him joy and relaxation. He delighted in watching old black and white movies and had a profound appreciation for music, amassing a collection of albums from numerous genres. Antiquing and reading were pastimes that also held a special place in his heart. He was a faithful member of the Central United Methodist Church in Kansas City, KS for nearly 25 years.

Fred leaves behind nephew, Arthur Elliott, (Mary), Las Vegas, NV; nieces, Michelle Elliott McGraw (Terry), Kansas City, MO and Stephanie Brooks, North Platte, NE; and great niece, Tara McGraw, Nashville, TN and cousins near and far. Fred's friendship with Pastor Gary Roellchen, cultivated over 27 years, was significant, especially as Pastor Gary offered his care and companionship since 2016.

He is predeceased by his parents and sisters, Paneli “Pam” Elliott and husband Arthur K. Elliott, Leawood, KS and Celia “Maree” Pryor Brooks, Morriston, FL. College friend and former partner Gary Dean Wick, Kansas City, KS. His childhood dog Hitler and a few cats along the way.

A graveside service to honor Fred's life will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas. At Fred and his family's request in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church, 933 Argentine Blvd, Kansas City, KS 66105.

Fred touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. His spirit will live on through the memories held dear by his loved ones and friends.
