Dottie Milliner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Oct. 10, 2025.
Dorothy Hubbard "Dottie" Milliner, 98, beloved wife of the late Cary F. Milliner, Jr., and resident of Onley, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2025, at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg, VA.
Born April 9, 1927, at her family home in Melfa, VA, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Joseph Hubbard and Margaret Mathias Hubbard. Grounded in an unwavering faith, Dottie was a devoted member of Onley United Methodist Church for several decades, where she faithfully served through the United Methodist Women. She was an active member of the church choir, a dedicated Sunday school teacher, and a leader of the Food for Friends outreach ministry. She was a graduate of Onancock High School and attended Longwood College. Beyond her role as a loving wife and mother, Dottie's professional career included administrative service with the Farmers Home Administration in Accomac, VA, the Federal Housing Administration in Richmond, VA, and the Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station on Chincoteague Island, VA.
A servant at heart, Dottie gave generously of her time to many community organizations, including Shore Memorial Hospital, Hospice of the Eastern Shore, Hermitage on the Eastern Shore, and the Accomack Interfaith Crisis Council. Alongside Cary, her husband of 67 years, she shared a life filled with love, travel, and joy in the simple pleasures of home and garden. She found great joy in gathering flowers from her garden, using them to adorn the church altar and to share with family and friends. Her dedication to gardening was further reflected in her decades-long membership with the Ye Accawmacke Garden Club, where she remains an honorary member posthumously.
In addition to her parents, Dottie was predeceased by her husband, Cary; her daughter, Ann Milliner Freeman; and her sister, Emma Sue Taylor. She is survived by her son, Cary F. Milliner III and his wife, Hollie, of Aiken, SC; son-in-law, Kriss Freeman of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren, Cary Milliner IV and his wife, Nicole, of Atlanta, GA, Gaines Milliner of Aiken, SC, Trevor Freeman of Lafayette, CO, Stewart Jones and her husband, Tyler, of Raleigh, NC, and Genevieve Ryder and her husband, Kyle, of Norfolk, VA; and great-grandchildren, Sullivan Spears Jones and Ann Scott Ryder.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Westminster Canterbury for the exceptional and compassionate care Dottie received during her time there, and especially for consistently going above and beyond to ensure her well-being.
A service to celebrate Dottie's life will be held at Onley United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with The Reverend James Canody officiating. The family will gather for private interment at the Mount Holly Cemetery.
Contributions in Dottie's memory may be made to Onley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 98, Onley, VA 23418 (www.onleyumc.org/donate) or to a charity of one's choice.
