Douglas Ray Bentlage was born January 8, 1954, to Raymond and Opal (nee' Reithemeyer) Bentlage. He passed away on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the age of 71 years.
Doug grew up in Union, MO and graduated from Union High School in 1972. He continued his education at University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Doug was united in marriage to Debora Ann Jost on Mary 11, 2000 at St. Ferdinand Church in Florissant, MO. The couple made their home in Florissant, moved to Muskego, WI in 2006, Prosper, TX in 2020 and settled in The Colony, TX in 2022. He was blessed with one son, Nicholas Ray Bentlage.
Throughout his life, Doug was an accomplished athlete. In high school, he was known for being an outstanding football player, but Doug also participated in basketball, track and field, and baseball all four years of high school and was an all-conference performer in all four sports. Doug was the first all-state football player from Union High School, and he was an all-state track performer in shot put. His record stood from 1971 until 1984. After graduating high school, Doug received a full scholarship to play football at Mizzou. He played all four years of college but was red-shirted his sophomore year due to a knee injury. He had a very successful career playing for the Tigers. When Doug turned 50, he began throwing the shot put and competing in weightlifting for the Senior Olympics. He also threw the shot put for the USA Track & Field Masters Division. Doug was inducted in the Union High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of the inaugural class of inductees.
Doug worked in sales for many years and served his community coaching basketball, volleyball, and track at St. Leonard's Catholic School in Muskego, WI. In recent years, Doug was a devoted stay-at-home dad who loved coaching and photographing his son, Nicholas, in all of his sports over the years. Doug also enjoyed wildlife photography and being outdoors. He spent his days landscaping and photographing flowers, birds, and animals when he was not lifting weights or throwing the shot put. Doug was a constant light for all of those whose lives he touched and will be dearly and deeply missed.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond H. and Opal M. Bentlage, along with his brother, Mark A. Bentlage.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Debora Bentlage of The Colony, TX, and his son, Nicholas Bentlage. He was a loving brother-in-law, cherished uncle to 11 nieces and nephews, inspiring coach to many, and dear friend.
Funeral services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to the Alzheimer's Association.
