Douglas “Bugly” J. Poortenga, age 73, of Fairwater, WI passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at his home, with his family by his side.
Bugly was born on January 14, 1952 in Grand Rapids, MI, son of Donald and Betty (Elzinga) Poortenga. He graduated from Laconia High School in Rosendale, WI. On September 3, 1979 he married Carla Schultz in Las Vegas. Bugly worked as a prison guard at Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, WI for over 20 years. In his free time he enjoyed racing, and cars in general were his passion. He also loved spending time with his friends and family, and a good game of cards was always his favorite.
Bugly is survived by his wife, Carla Poortenga; sons, Jason Poortenga of Fairwater, WI and Jeffry Poortenga of Brandon, WI; a granddaughter, Alecia Richter; two brothers, Dave (Donna) Poortenga and Dan Poortenga; brother-in-law, Randy (Lori) Schultz; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Poortenga, Judy Doherty, and Bonnie (Lee) Schultz; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Betty Poortenga; two brothers, Gene and Donald Poortenga; and a grandson, Dominic Richter.
Per his wishes, no funeral services will be held at this time. A celebration of life for Bugly will be held at a later date. His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to SSM Health at Home Hospice, especially Amy and Janine for their wonderful care of Bugly.
