Douglas R. Byas, born on April 23, 1948, passed away on February 19, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, and commitment that touched many lives throughout his 76 years.
Education was important to Doug, who began his studies at Kalamazoo Central High School. His journey took him into the military, where he served in the United States Navy from 1965 until his discharge in 1969, completing his education during this time. His experiences in the military contributed to the intelligent, organized, and thorough individual he became.
Doug was also immensely proud of his 58-year marriage to his beloved wife, Linda. Their enduring partnership was a testament to the love and commitment they shared through all the seasons of life.
Doug devoted over 36 years of his life to General Motors, where he was a steadfast presence until the very end. He played a pivotal role during the company's transition period, assisting employees with relocation before retiring as the Union Representative at the Kalamazoo plant. His commitment to his colleagues and to the industry was evident in the compassion he showed to those navigating significant changes in their careers.
Beyond his career, Doug’s community involvement was notable. He served as the Wakeshma Township Supervisor. Additionally, he held the role of Assistant Chief of the Wakeshma Fire Department prior to the department's integration into the South County Fire Authority.
Doug’s life was enriched by his love for golf. A member of Angels Crossing in Vicksburg, he relished every opportunity to tee off, and he took great pride in his two hole-in-ones at the Olde Mill Golf Club in Schoolcraft. He was also once a drummer in a local band, he also had a creative side, bringing joy to many through music.
Those who knew Doug would describe him as kind, helpful, and exceptionally handy, especially when it came to working on classic cars and hot rods. His technical skills reflected a meticulous nature and an ability to approach challenges with a systematic mindset.
In remembering Douglas R. Byas, we celebrate not only his contributions to his profession and community but also the love and laughter he brought to his family and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Doug is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda; two children: Tamela (Brian) Campbell, of Portage; James (Michelle Stickley) Byas, of Scotts; four grandchildren: Richard (Elise) Campbell; Branda (James) Backoff; Kaitlyn Byas; and Courtney Byas; two great grandchildren: Brynn Backoff and Rowan Campbell; and one great grandchild on the way: Teigan Campbell.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Roy and Margaret Byas; siblings: Ron Byas and Sue Fletcher.
There will be a Celebration of Life Gathering on Wednesday, March 12th, 2025 at the funeral home from 4pm to 7pm. He will have his ashes buried with military honors at a later date.
