UNION SPRINGS - Douglas Jay Gilfus, 70, of Union Springs, passed away on February 16, 2026, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.
Born in Auburn on August 24, 1955, Douglas was the son of the late Gerald and Almina Holbein Gilfus. He was employed for many years at the Milliken Station Power Plant in Lansing, N.Y. as a welder and electrician.
Douglas was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and maintaining a beautiful garden. Above all, Douglas was a family man. He loved family gatherings and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Douglas is survived by his children, Danielle (Jose Reyes) Gilfus and Scott (Kristen) Gilfus; his siblings, Deborah, Donald, James, Barbara and Katherine; his grandchildren, Skylar and Wyatt Gilfus, Ella Jean Gilfus and Jose, Jaden and Jayla Reyes.
In addition to his parents, Gerald and Almina, Douglas was predeceased by his son, Benjamin Gilfus in 2023; and his stepmother, Barbara DeForrest Gilfus; and his brother, Patrick Gilfus.
Calling hours for Douglas will be held on Saturday, February 28th, from noon to 2 p.m. in White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South Street, Auburn NY.

Yesterday
We are cousins, his birth Mom died of an aneurism of the brain, when Doug was in his high chair..I never knew his Mom, she was my Dad's sister. We as a family, had the Gilfus family over to our farm a few times. As a youngster, we had lots of fun. Swinging in the willow, and hide and seek. I saw Doug at the food court in the mall in Syr., Destiny...I recognized him and we had a short visit. May he rest in peace, we all have our struggles here on earth.

Bob and I are deeply sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. He was a wonderful friend and will be missed. It seems like only yesterday he was hosing down with ice-cold water the two of you, Ben, Jason, and Heather for jumping in the clay in natural gas well. Or the five of you towing a makeshift go-kart behind the mower, and zip lining between homes. Keep those memories, all those good times growing up on Vanliew, they will make you smile. Unfortunately, Bob and I will be out of town during the calling hours but wanted to let you know that we will be thinking of you and sending our blessings. You know we are always here if you need anything. Our condolences go out to your entire family.
