Obituary of Douglas E. Heller
On November 29, 2024, the world lost a great man, Douglas Edward Heller, a longtime Chester Township resident. He was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and a friend to many. Douglas led a life that touched the hearts of everyone he knew, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he influenced.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Catherine Heller (née Bichun); his devoted children Douglas and his wife, Carlyn, and Courtney Heller; four cherished grandchildren Chase, Avery, Chloe, and Rylee; one older brother, Peter, and one younger sister, Jeanne Anne; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Douglas was born in Summit on January 1, 1952, to the late Eugene Paul and Shirley Louise Heller (née Auringer) and was raised in Madison. As a young man, he was an avid sportsman, becoming captain of the Madison High School football and wrestling teams as well as ranking 3 in the state in wrestling. He would later coach youth programs in Randolph and Mendham.
He shared a rare and beautiful love with his wife, Catherine, a love that few people are fortunate enough to experience. The couple met at Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1972 and were married on July 10, 1976. Together, they traveled the world, embracing new cultures and creating memories that will forever be treasured. His adventurous spirit and zest for life made him the life of every party, and he knew how to bring joy to any room.
Douglas had worked in the family business, E.P. Heller Company in Madison, since the age of 16, manufacturing carbide cutting tools for power gen and aerospace industries. E.P. Heller Company was Douglas's pride and joy. He worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the family business. As a father to his children, Doug and Courtney, Douglas was supportive, kind, and always ready to lend a helping hand. His love extended to his grandchildren-Chase, Avery, Chloe, and Rylee-who brought him immense pride and joy. He was a dedicated leader, respected in both his professional and personal life, always guiding others with wisdom, compassion, and integrity.
Douglas lived a full and exceptional life, one that made a lasting impact on all who knew him. His infectious laughter, his generosity of spirit, and his unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
Rest in peace, Doug. Your light will never fade.
A Celebration of life for Douglas will be held in the spring for friends and family.
In lieu of flowers charitable contributions may be made in Douglas' memory to the Ted Monica Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made to Madison High School and the Ted Monica Scholarship Fund written in the check memo, then mailed to: Madison High School, 170 Ridgedale Avenue, Madison, NJ 07940.

I was so sorry to see this. I met Doug and Patty when we were attending the University of Cincinnati. Doug lived in the apartment above mine for a year. We were friends for the two years our degrees kept us at UC. I am happy to learn he had a beautiful life with such warm and loving people. Our paths crossed for such a short time, but he was/is unforgettable. Sending blessings of love and light to family and friends.

All the wonderful memories are flooding back as I write this note. Pat Esposito introduced us to Kathy and Doug and Pat asked Doug not to "act to outrageous" since I was a recent acquaintance of Pat. We went out to an Italian place and in the restaurant a piano player played Sinatra tunes. By the end of the night he and I were singing as loudly as we could with smiles on our faces. I´m sure Doug thought Pat´s request was a bit overblown.

Kathy, Milagros and I send our condolences to you and your family. An amazing individual that we both valued as a friend.

Doug was my cousin Patrick Esposito´s
Best Bud. We shared many a party and many a family funeral .
I sat with Doug and Cathy at Aunt Nancy´s funeral last year.
With my Best Bud as well and Carol Ann
He always made me feel Special.
He was always the Life of the Party at Aunt Nancy´s Lake house.
Madison will always remember this Man as a Humorous Spirit.
May You Rest In Eternal Peace my friend...
And may your friends and family find peace as well.
Love, Laura Lee

Mr Heller was one of a kind!!!! He was always there for my brother and I growing up in Randolph. He was a coach/mentor overall great man who would even pick us up on Sundays and take us to the YMCA to learn how to lift weights and workout.
Something I still think about today is that he always said there is no excuse for being slow. You are only slow because you want to be slow. You can go outside anywhere and practice running to get faster and he was 100% right. I run everyday Mr Heller.
I have a lot of love for that man who I now regret not telling him how much he meant to me and my brother growing up. You will be missed Mr. Heller!!! Jim Clarke

To our "favorite neighbor " -
We will always remember the good times - our children growing up, weddings, wine, meals - and those freezing days chipping ice on our driveway. Doug´s idea to clear the sides of our road together turned out beautifully.
