Douglas Janow Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Graham Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Nov. 5, 2025.
Douglas Ray Janow, 86, passed away Tuesday November 4, 2025, at home with his loving daughters by his side. He was born in Chattanooga, TN to the late Bessie Mae Janow. He grew up in the small town of Spring City, TN.
Douglas joined the Navy at 17 and made a lifelong career of it. He took great pride in serving his country doing five tours during the Vietnam War. The Navy brought him to Norfolk, VA where he met his devoted wife, Kay Mosher Janow who preceded him in death.
After falling in love with her and her three children; Susan Smith, Steve Mosher and Timmy Mosher (deceased), they married in September 1971. Doug and Kay went on to have two more daughters, JoEllyn "Jody" Janow and Jill Janow Wynne (James). After 20 years Doug was blessed with two grandsons and a granddaughter, Joel Wynne, Garrett Janow-Shreeves and Jamie Wynne. He and Kay also shared seven more grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Doug always wanted to belong to a big family which he accomplished through marriage. Later in life Doug had a happy surprise and found out he had an additional son, Mike Pruger of Santa Cruz, CA.
He was predeceased by his mother, Bessie Mae Janow Roberts, stepfather Wheeler Roberts, one sister, Inez Miller and two brothers, Fred Miller and James Roberts.
Doug retired from the Navy in March 1976. After retirement he went on to work for Eure Rentals, Waste Management and Tidewater Fiber Corp. He was a kind, generous man who worked hard to provide for his family. Doug was the hardest working man you could ever meet. He was an avid hunter, being a member of the Carson Hunt Club and was also a member of the Knights of Pythias. He was funny, silly and a child at heart who was adored by everyone who met him. You could always find him on the front porch with a big smile and a wave. He was a loving husband and father that will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 10, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake VA. A funeral ceremony will take place at the funeral home Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 11a.m. with the burial to follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
Following the internment the family will welcome friends and family at 1104 Wadena Road, Chesapeake VA. Please visit www.grahamfuneral.com to view the service live if unable to attend and to leave condolences to the family.
