Douglas Earl Krum of Sherburne passed away on June 8, 2025. He was 92 years old.
Doug was born in Liberty, NY on November 5, 1932. He was the son of Earl and Adele (Ropke) Krum. He was predeceased by his sister, Caroline. After serving two years in the US Army, Doug attended Colgate University (Class of 1956) receiving his BA and MA degrees in science.
Doug taught science at Sherburne Earlville High School, then Sherburne Central School and, finally, Sherburne-Earlville Central Schools. He retired in 1988 after 32 years. Following a year of evening courses he worked as a nurse at Chenango Memorial Hospital for over 10 years. In retirement he worked as a patient/family volunteer with Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County.
In 1960 he married Sharron Fobes of Sherburne, who died in 1977. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rowena, and their children, Stephen Douglas Krum (Brenda) of Placitas, NM, Lisa Krum Starzyk (William) of Pleasant Valley, NY, Barbara Krum Hartman (James) of Smithfield, NC, Rebecca Bunnell Lyon (Richard) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Robert William Bunnell (Margaret) of Fairfax, VA. He is survived by 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Doug loved living in Sherburne and Upstate NY. He was a voracious reader. He spent many happy summers sailing on Otsego Lake in Cooperstown. He loved driving small cars with standard transmissions and his kayak strapped on top.
Doug spent his final two years as a resident of the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.
At Doug's request there will be a family celebration of life in the fall.
