Douglas Matney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Feb. 27, 2026.
Douglas Everett Matney, 71, of Beverly, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 24th.

Born in Boston on November 14th, 1954, Doug was the son of the late Everett and Constance (Suffreti) Matney. Raised in Lynn, he received his early education through the Lynn Public School system. Doug dedicated 28 years of service as a head custodian, first at Memorial Middle School and later at Beverly Middle School, where he ultimately retired. He cared deeply for the school community and the students whose lives he quietly impacted each day.

Though often mistaken for a quiet observer, it never took much to bring Doug out of his shell. Beneath his gruff exterior was a man with a tremendous heart who loved a good laugh and enjoyed time spent with family. His sense of humor and the sparkle in his eye when teasing or telling a story will be deeply missed.

Doug was a devoted grandfather who never passed up the chance to start a game of ball in the yard, take a swim in the pool, or get together for a special meal. He took genuine interest in his grandchildren's lives and followed their hobbies and accomplishments with pride.

An avid sports fan, Doug loved watching games of all kinds, even bowling. With a box of Cheez-Its carefully tucked out of sight, he loved to settle into his favorite chair to cheer on his beloved Boston teams, a loyal fan to the very end. Doug was also a devoted fan of Elvis Presley, whose music reflected his spiritual and sentimental side.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Annmarie (Driscoll) Matney; his three sons, Doug Matney Jr. and his partner Aliza Smith of Florida; James Matney and his partner Amy Woods of Fiskdale, MA; and Joseph Matney and his wife Emily of Palmer, MA; and his stepdaughter, Andrea Knight of Sanford, ME. He was the proud grandfather of Samantha Matney; Doug Matney III; Michael Matney; Amelia Dibattista; Joseph Matney Jr.; Daniel Matney; Tiegan Eisenhaur; Priscilla Pais; and Zachary Pais; and great-grandfather to Avaya Hayward. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Lee Matney; and his nephew, Todd Matney. He also leaves behind two members of his chosen family, dear friends Chris Hanson and Karen Sahovey.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Steven Matney.

Doug will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast love, and the deep devotion he held for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, laughter, and unwavering care that will live on in all who knew him.

His funeral service will be held at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly, on Monday, March 2nd at 12:00 p.m. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
