Douglas Mayo was born on July 3, 1934, in Anniston, Alabama. He was the 5th child born to Joe and Agaza Goggins Mayo.
He attended Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston. After graduation, he served in the Army where he spent time in Germany.
After serving his country, Doug joined other family members in Buffalo, New York, where he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Company.
His next adventure was to head west to Los Angeles with his brother Jimmy, where they worked in the construction industry. After retiring, Doug attended a family reunion in Virginia Beach in 1994 and decided that it would be where he would relocate and settle. There, he would join family members Frank and Theresa Long, who had been long term residents of Virginia Beach.
His new location allowed for more convenient travel up and down the east coast. He, along with his brother John, started playing golf around this time and enjoyed getting together for golf trips to Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Connecticut, Chicago, Detroit, and Charlotte.
As a life-long bachelor, he would often joke that his wife was out fishing. He prided himself on his physical fitness routine and was disciplined about his diet.
He could always be counted on to contribute to the singing that would always punctuate a gathering of the Mayo family. He was a loyal family member who took pride in discussing the details of the Mayo family tree.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents Joe and Agaza, his sisters Grace and Hattie Mae (Long), brothers Bill, Joe, Jimmy, and Clyde.
His survivors include brothers John (Johnnie – deceased), Cecil (Sandra), and Claude (Jean-deceased). A host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends also mourn his passing.
