In Loving Memory of Douglas Robert Smith April 21, 1949 - October 8, 2025 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Douglas Robert Smith, 76, of Elwood, IL, who left this world on October 8, 2025, just three months after the death of his beloved wife, Benita.
Born in Joliet, Illinois, on April 21, 1949, Doug was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, great grandfather, and cherished friend. He lived a life marked by deep integrity and a steadfast love for his family.
From the moment Doug and Bonnie's paths crossed, they were inseparable. Their marriage of 56 years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. When Bonnie passed away in July, a part of Doug left with her. In life, they were rarely apart-and in death, their bond remains unbroken.
A mechanic by trade for 44 years and a lover of cars and motorcycles, Doug found joy in life's simple pleasures: time with family, watching a rerun of Andy Griffith from the recliner, keeping a pristine lawn, or watching Clyde at the hummingbird feeder from his lawn chair. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. A natural storyteller, he had a gift for turning even the simplest moment into something memorable, often with a laugh and a twinkle in his eye. Whether it was offering a helping hand, lending an ear, or going out of his way for someone in need, he was the kind of man who would do anything for anyone-without hesitation and without expecting anything in return. His warmth, kindness, and larger-than-life presence left a mark on everyone he met.
Doug was the kind of man who led not with words, but with quiet strength and unwavering dedication. Day in and day out, he gave his all - not just to provide, but to teach, to guide, and to inspire. Through his hard work, integrity, and resilience, he set a powerful example for his children. They saw in him what it meant to be strong, to be kind, and to never give up. He was more than a provider - he was a role model, a foundation, and a constant source of love and wisdom. We honor him not just for what he's done, but for who he was: a man worth looking up to. He is survived by his children, Jeremy (Tara) Smith and Jennifer (Michael Matusak) Smith; his grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Tera (Travis) Jensen, Ryan Smith, Rachel Smith and Brandon Matusak; his great grandchildren, Lily and Charlee Smith; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-n-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jack and Charlotte Eslinger. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at Carlson Holmquist Sayles Funeral Home in Joliet, Illinois. Doug will be laid to rest at Sugar Grove Church and Cemetery, in Chrisman, Illinois on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 12:00 pm.
Though our hearts ache with his absence, we take comfort in knowing Doug and Bonnie are together again, hand in hand, just as they were meant to be.
