Douglas Tarkowski

Douglas Tarkowski, age 77, a resident of Eagle River, passed away on November 14, 2025, at home with his daughters and Dalmatian by his side.
Doug was born on April 21, 1948, to Frederick and Valeska (Kohls) Tarkowski in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He grew up in Sheboygan and graduated from Sheboygan South High School in 1966. Doug married Betsy Arpke in 1969. They moved to Traverse City, Michigan, in 1979, where he attended the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, graduating in 1982. Doug was an officer in the Merchant Marines and became a chief engineer, sailing on the Great Lakes for 20+ years. Doug and Betsy moved to Eagle River in 1996 to be closer to family. After retiring from sailing, Doug enjoyed doing handyman work and was an active member at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner.
Doug loved his job and enjoyed telling "sea stories" to all who would listen. He was very mechanical and enjoyed doing home projects. Doug had an infectious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed good food, trains, reading, and spending time with those he loved.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Tim, and his wife of 54 years, Betsy.
Doug is survived by his daughters: Tammy (Dean) Meissner and Kristi Tarkowski; brother: David; and Andy the Dalmatian.
A celebration of life will be held for Doug on Saturday, December 6 at 11 a.m. at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner with visitation starting at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Shepherd of the Lakes.
The family would like to thank Marshfield Clinic for the care Doug received as well as Compassus Hospice, whose compassionate care was a blessing.
Doug will be missed tremendously, and his memory will live in the hearts of all who loved him.
