Doyle was born on July 29, 1931 in Van Alstyne(Grayson County),Texas to Hardie Dee
Nelson and Alma Ruth Canada Nelson. Doyle passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023
in Quitman,Texas at the age of 91.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Damon Nelson and
Jerry Nelson, and by his infant son, Bryan Dee Nelson.
Doyle is survived by his wife of 71 years, JoAnna Harbuck Nelson of Quitman. Three
children: daughter Janet Nelson Hester and husband Tom of Winnsboro, daughter
Nancy Nelson Jackson and husband Tim of Quitman, and son Russell Scott Nelson and
wife, Cindy of McGregor, Texas. Five grandchildren: Matthew Jackson and wife,
Amanda of Lindale, Texas, Anna Zachary of Bettie, Texas, Elizabeth Jackson Miller and
husband Michael of Bettie, Texas, Adam Nelson of Dallas, Texas, and Ben Nelson of
North Richland Hills, Texas. Six great-grandchildren.
Doyle and JoAnna were high school sweethearts and graduated from Irving High
School in 1950. They were married on August 3, 1951 in Irving, Texas where they lived
and worked until May of 1971 and have lived in Wood County since then..
Doyle was a “jack of all trades.” His first occupation was a brick mason, then co-owner
of a camper business, greenhouse operator, and homebuilder. He could have also been
called a “Mr. Fix It.”
He had many hobbies including: restoration of two 1966 Mustangs, woodworking, and
playing with beloved grandkids, including attending as many sporting events and
school activities as he could
After retiring, he and JoAnna traveled to 47 of the 50 States.i.
No one ever heard Doyle curse or raise his voice. He was a gentle, soft spoken, yet a
strong man. He was a God-fearing Christian man. John was his favorite book of the
Bible.
Services for Doyle will be held 2:00PM Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Church on the Rock in Quitman, Texas with burial to follow at Quitman City Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to service time at Church on the Rock.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Doyle can be made in his memory to Texas Scottish Rites Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Texas: 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219, and Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
