Dr. Charles Shoham, Madison, passed away on 23 Dec 2023, while in the comforting care of Agrace Hospice, Fitchburg, after a long illness. Charles was born 28 June 1952, New York City, to Joseph and Ethel (Levitas) Shoham. He attended high school in Latham, NY where he excelled in math and German language studies. He received his AB and MD degree from Boston University in 1976. He practiced pain management in Ohio, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin.

Charles married Sue Ann Shoham (1942 - 2011), in Minneapolis, MN, in 1977. Sue passed in 2011 after years of happy marriage. Charles was a loving brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Charles is survived by their daughters Beth (Sean) Welch, of Madison, and Joan (Matt) Dillingham, of Sugarland, TX. He is further survived by his brother Mike, sister in law, Andrea Shoham, of Vienna, VA, niece, Lauren (Shoham) Springer, as well as many beloved cousins and friends across the States.

Most special to Charlie, he was the proud grandfather of three grandsons, Patrick Welch, Erik Dillingham, and Alexander Dillingham.

In his post-practice life he volunteered as an English tutor for WESLI and The Literacy Network, and as an Ombudsman for the Wisconsin Long Term Care Program. He tutored MMSD middle schoolers through The Schools of Hope Americorps Program and volunteered as a friendly visitor through Jewish Social Services. Charles served on the Access to Independence Board of Directors for eight years.

He enjoyed playing bridge with his buddies Phil and Mike through The Madison Bridge Club, where he attained the level of Regional Master. He was terrible at chess, but an excellent student of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, having won our house competitions many times. He was a serious reader of American fiction, plays, poetry, and Jewish philosophy. He was an amateur climate and weather watcher and colored pencil sketcher - leaving behind many treasured works of dogs and birds.

We will miss his sense of his humor, his humbleness, his devotion to doing good, and his love of people, including us - his neighbors, friends, and family, who will miss him most dearly.

The family extends gratitude to Agrace, UW Hospital, and to the friendly visitors for such compassionate and attentive support to Charlie. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Jewish Social Services of Madison. https://form-renderer-app.donorperfect.io/give/jewish-social-services/jss-general-copy
