Dr. Dale Wood Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Jul. 28, 2020.
Dr. Dale Allen Wood of San Antonio passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Dale was a man of highest character consistently demonstrating integrity, thoughtfulness, humility, and his faith in God. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather affectionately known as "Papa". A physician in San Antonio for 43 years, he was dedicated to each of his patients and worked tirelessly for their health and wellbeing. He was passionate about taking care of others and also about making a difference for those less fortunate. He devoted his time and expertise locally, nationally, and internationally. He was always available and there was never a problem too large or too small. Dale was truly a man for all seasons and he will be greatly missed by those who had the good fortune of knowing him. Dale was born on February 4, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois to Hubert O. "Bob" Wood and Jean Carolyn McAfee Wood. He attended Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Illinois. During this time, he participated in the Boy Scouts of America and earned his Eagle Scout badge with two palms. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. In 1965, he entered medical school at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. Following medical school, Dale completed an Internship and Residency in Pediatrics at Brooke Army Hospital Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, and a Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. Upon completion of his fellowship, he returned to San Antonio where he served in the United States Army Medical Corps in the Departments of Pediatric and Allergy/Immunology at Brooke General Hospital and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Upon returning, he was also appointed the Army's Child Advocate for Children of Abuse. While serving in this position, he was invited to speak at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland on child abuse. After completion of his military service, he continued his work as an advocate for children of abuse, and he served as chairman of the San Antonio Child Abuse Council for many years. In 1977, he established the Southwest Asthma and Allergy Clinic in San Antonio where he practiced for 43 years. Dale was a devoted physician who cared and advocated for countless patients, many of whom became close friends, before retiring in June 2020. During medical school, Dale married Mertie Lewis of Abilene, Texas on June 18, 1966. In June, they celebrated 54 wonderful years of marriage. Mertie and Dale have two children, Andrea Lynn Wood Potter of Williamsburg, Virginia and Eric Allen Wood of Denver, Colorado and four grandchildren. Dale was also a member of the Downtown Rotary Club for 30 years and was the given the Perfect Attendance Award. Dale was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in San Antonio. He was ordained a Deacon of the church in 1998 and went on to become a Lifetime Deacon in 2019. He also volunteered weekly at their prayer room for many years. Truly, he was a good and faithful servant of his Lord. Dale loved skiing, hunting and fishing, and in his later years retreating to his ranch located in Southwest Texas with his precious wife Mertie and his beloved dog, Schotzie. For the last 20 years, one of his favorite pastimes was hosting Thanksgiving at the ranch, which became a much beloved family tradition. He was a dedicated fisherman who always took the time to teach his grandchildren, and nieces and nephews how to catch all sorts of swimming creatures. He also enjoyed watching Cowboys football and going to Spurs basketball games to cheer for his beloved team and assist the referees with their officiating. Dale was preceded in death by his parents Hubert O. "Bob" Wood and Jean Carolyn McAfee Wood, his brother, Gary Lee Wood, sister-in-law, Diema Carpenter, his grandparents Charles and Agnes Wood and Roy and Viola McAfee, his step-father George Nickolas, and his Uncle Dale Wood and wife Ann. I am very saddened to find Dr Wood's obituary. Every time I drove by Hildebrand, I thought of him and hoped that he was enjoying retirement with his family.
My husband and I are very grateful to Dr Wood for treating our daughter's allergy and asthma when she was a young child. He told us that she was one of his youngest patients ever, and the only two times she ever had to be hospitalized were when he was not on call. We were saddened that we did not feel comfortable sending her to church camp when she was a young child due to her severe asthma. Dr Wood sponsored her opportunity to go to Allergy/ Asthma Camp and we were so grateful. Over the years, he treated my mother, another daughter, many friends, as well as myself. I am very confident that he was greeted in heaven by Jesus, saying, Well done my good and faithful servant.

Just today I find this obituary about our beloved
Dr Wood. He took great care of me, my husband, children and grandchild since 1981. Because of his great care, I've been fairly well for 2 years. Now I look him up once again needing allergy help. I'm praising God he's in Heaven. But this world has lost an incredible man, doctor, and friend. He dearly loved the Lord, his family and patients. He'd ask about each person in my family every time I saw him. He will forever be missed. My condolences to Mertie and family.
Sincerely, Dea Warnken

My condolences to the family, friends, and staff of Dr. Wood. I am so shocked and heartbroken about his passing, knowing he was looking forward to enjoying his retirement. I have been a patient of Dr. Wood's for over 20 years. I have known many physicians throughout the years, both professionally and as my personal physicians, and Dr. Wood was the absolute best. I truly admired him both as a physician as well as a person. He was such a fine example of a Christian and how we should live our lives.
I know he will be truly missed, yet I'm comforted to know that he's got a special place in heaven.

Dr. Wood was an amazing doctor. He was the standard all doctors should reach for. His office was the only one that treated you as if your time was important and who saw you as soon as you walked in the door. He spent time with me in his office explaining how he was going to treat my illness. I always left his office with a feeling of being listened to. I haven't found another doctor like him. I probably never will. He will be remembered.

I want to express my deepest sympathies at Dale's passing. I was one of his early patients when he opened his practice on Hildebrand (and required Benadryl during my testing!). When one of my children needed an allergist many years later, I knew exactly where I would take him. And Dale cared for him just as I knew he would. His was a life well lived. May you find comfort at this difficult time.

Sending my heartfelt condolences. I was a patient of Dr. Woods for 33 years. I moved to Texas from Indiana and never had allergies. At the time I had no insurance and I could barely afford to See him let alone the medicine and treatment but Dr. Woods always made sure I had both. He was so loving and always was so thoughtful. He made a major difference in my life and it may sound weird but I loved him and truly cared for him. I wanted you to know that he was incredibly amazing man. Thank you for sharing him with us he will be truly missed.

My heart is so broken today to learn of Dr. Wood's passing. There are no words to describe the loss. When I found out he was retiring, I was devastated, but at least I consoled myself with the thought that he would be able to enjoy his retirement, which he so richly deserved. I wanted to give him a gift that would reflect how much I deeply appreciated and loved him, so I found a plaque that stated - "Never Forget the Difference You've Made". As his patient for 15 years, those words reflected how not only I felt about him, but now I know, how all of his patients felt. I came to Dr. Wood with severe breathing problems following a lobectomy due to cancer. He took it upon himself to contact the National Jewish Research Hospital in Denver and within two weeks, I was there. When I checked in, I found out that there was a two year waiting list. He went above and beyond to help save my life. Dr. Wood was the most caring and compassionate doctor I've ever known. In fact, my daughter and grandchildren all became his patients as well and they too grew to love him as much as I did. He lived his Christian faith by his outpouring of love, kindness and compassion he showed to everyone. He was one of a kind. My deepest sympathies to his family on their tremendous loss. He will be greatly missed more then you can imagine, and no one can, or ever will replace him! You will all be in my prayers.

Dr. Wood was so much more than my mom's boss. He was family. He was the most generous, kind man and the very definition of integrity and compassion.

As a first generation college student, it meant everything to me to have someone of his status and success believe in me and care for my family.

Even though it had been years since I had last seen him since moving to Houston, in my family's hardest, most difficult time Dr. Wood and Mertie still took the time and effort to hand write my wife and I prayer cards for my then unborn daughter. That's just the kind of good person Dr. Wood was. I remember opening the first card and wondering who it was from, because I could hardly read the writing. Not being able to read it, of course, confirmed it was from Dr. Wood. I was deeply grateful but not surprised. Regardless of how successful and busy he was he always found time to show that he cared for his employees, his patients, friends, and family. Your prayers worked, Dr. Wood.

You did so much for my family. I will miss your extra firm handshakes and our chats about our beloved Spurs. I am so heartbroken that you are gone. Thank you for everything you did. Your lessons and legacy will never be forgotten. Your impact is everlasting. Rest in Power.

August 3, 2020

Dear.Dr.Wood, the Ristow family loved you so much. We are so blessed we had the opportunity to see you and tell you thank you for everything that you have done for us in the 34 years we have known you. And to let you know how much we love you. Mertie, Andrea, Eric, you are so blessed to have had such an awesome husband/ father who loved you and his grandchildren so much that we knew of you. But we even knew how much Dr.Wood loved our Lord. And we were in his prayer list. He took such good care of my husband, myself, but especially our two sons. He made sure they had everything they needed for their asthma. Jason and Scott were loved by their doctor and they felt his love. He remained friends with Scott even as Scott got older because Scott still had health issues and Dr.Wood wanted to make sure he got the right treatment. He dismissed a lot of our payments because he cared more about us getting well than getting paid. There will never be another doctor that loves his family, his patients and the Lord as much as Dr. Dale Wood. Mertie, Andrea, Eric, please accept our deepest heartfelt sympathy on your loss. Just know he moved from earth to heaven.

It was my privilege to be to know Dale for over 30 years in the San Antonio Allergy-Immunology community. He was always willing to volunteer and help out with worthy projects like Camp Broncho run by the San Antonio American Lung Assoc and San Antonio Asthma Allergy and Immunology Society. I think he was involved with nearly every Camp we ran volunteering to cover one of the nights and provide medical care for asthmatic children so they could enjoy the benefits of summer camp. I was unaware of the many other activities Dale was involved in, but it does not surprise me because that is the type of guy he was. It was always a pleasure to interact with Dale. He was a genuinely nice person. He will be missed in the allergy-immunology community. I have kept him in my prayers since I heard last week of his passing.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Dale Wood. he was my allergist from my late teens until my early 30's. An amazing physician who loved and truly cared for his patients, a man who loved being a doctor and doing the best he could for his patients. Very sweet and honest person.

I remembering moving into my first apartment and my first Christmas in that apartment. The Optimist Christmas Tree Lot was around the corner from my building. Dr. Wood was on duty the night this 18 year old went to purchase her first tree-he was so sweet and caring and actually sold a very nice tree for $ 5.00. I was so touched an actually cried being a young one with little money and he really made my whole Christmas that year.

My condolences to Mrs. Wood and their beautiful children.

Rest in Peace Dr. Wood. I know the Lord welcomed you with open arms and said "well done good and faithful servant".

Dr. Dale Wood was a friend and an inspiration. He was always ready with a friendly smile and kind words. He genuinely cared about those around him. He encouraged me to write articles for the Bexar County Medical Society journal. He was so much in favor of communicating your beliefs, no matter what they were, that he sponsored writing classes so all could attend at a reasonable cost. My life is truly better for having known Dale Wood!

Sweet Mertie, I have only met you & Dr. Wood once through a dear mutual friend, Paula. I do believe we were lounging by your lovely pool (with permission of course), as if it were our very own. One can dream, so in all probability you don't remember me. I was immediately impressed with Dr. Wood's gracious generosity. Paula always speaks so fondly and with highest regards. I feel as if I know you Mertie and your kindnesses with others in mind always, the famous "Mertie" touch. It was no secret that Dr. Wood loved his family and did his very very best to keep his loved ones comfortable. Your love for your family was proven through your leading by example the important values in life, passed on to your children, grandchildren, and many more generations to follow in perpetuity. "Papa" is in the glorious hands of the Lord, always remember the very goodness of the man. Mertie rely on your beliefs that you have learned since childhood. God's arms are open wide for you and he will guide you through faith, prayer through your asking Him. I have no idea what you and your family, his family, friends must be feeling, I wish you love. Mertie, please let your friends and family help you, it honors them. It shows strength, not weakness. I have a candle burning for you and yours, and many prayers. Debra (Deb) Hearrean ...Paula's dear friend of 63 glorious years. Wow how lucky we are to have such an honest, loving, caring, generous person who is there when you need her. People like Paula are rare, as they have broken the mold with her.
Peace be with you.

Words cannot express how sad this makes me. Dr. Wood was a doctor, a friend, and one of the kindest people I have ever met. He spent time with every patient, knew their "story" and made it so easy to love seeing the doctor! He asked about a very ill family member every time that I saw him and when we lost my brother in law, a patient of his, he called to offer condolences. With every visit, he made you feel like you were the most important patient in his practice - and I am certain he did that for everyone. To his dear family - thank you for sharing Dr. Wood with us for all of these years. We are all enriched for having known Dale Wood. I don't expect to ever meet another like him! Vaya Con Dios dear friend.

It was with great honor, privilege, and a blessing to have worked for such a wonderful caring Christian doctor. Dr. Wood showed everyone that walked through the doors of his clinic, including his staff, that they were loved. Mertie, Andrea, and Eric, may God bless you, comfort you, and give you His peace. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Matthew 5:4

I would like to first express my condolences to the family. Dr. Wood was a wonderful, caring, compassionate doctor. I was his patient for over 20 years and I will truly miss him. I started taking my son to him
and he also cared deeply for him. They would talk about the Spurs which they both loved. He was an incredible person and we will miss him immensely. Rest in peace My Dear Dr. Wood!

I am very sadden to hear of Dr Wood passing . I have been a patient of his for over 25 years and my sons saw him also when they were little they would call him the back doctor since that is where the allergy testing was done . I would see him once a month for my shot and he would come in the exam room saying it is a zoo out there and we would both laugh . He would always ask me about my job as a NICU RN, he would ask me how the kiddos were doing . I remember when he was having his knee replaced he asked me if I would pray at the time of the surgery, I set 3 alarms so I would not forget , I could not let Dr Wood down . I feel I am a better person, nurse just from meeting him and him taking care of me . Upon reading his obituary I saw he did his pediatric residency at Fort Sam Army hospital i was born there that same year 1965 , it is a small beautiful world . I wish to send condolence and prayers to his family, office staff, patients and friends as we are all mourning at this time .

Dearest Mertie: Jody and I are praying for your peace during this incredibly difficult time. "Imagine..." was in an obituary last week and for some reason I saved it. The message describes a peaceful beginning!
"Imagine stepping onto a shore and finding it is Heaven.
Imagine taking hold of a hand and finding it is God's hand.
Imagine breathing new air and finding it is celestial.
Imagine feeling invigorated and finding it is immortality.
Imagine passing from storms and tempests to an unknown calm.
Imagine waking up and finding it is home.
May God's grace embrace you and your family.

Dr. Wood was many things. My physician, my son's physician and a friend for 29 years. He took me to Spurs games twice and gave me tickets as well. My son, who is autistic, needed some special service and Dr. Wood took great care of him like Jacob was his child. I last saw him the last afternoon he worked. I was shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. I hope his wife and children know how much he will be greatly missed and I will always have a special place in my heart for Dr. Wood. A very special man!

My heart hurts for Mertie and your family. You were truly one of a kind!!! I thank you for your love and will miss you for the rest of my life. I was blessed to work for you and Where can I even begin, Dr Wood was a One of a Kind person. He loved his family he loved his patients he loved everyone!!!! I met him when I was 20 and started my 14 1/2 year employment with Southwest Asthma and Allergy Clinic. Little did I know that being employed by him would mean I would gain him as not only a friend but as family. He took care of all his staff and never let us go without. He was loved by all of his patients and if you ask any of them they would NEVER have anything bad to say about him. He was a special man to everyone who was blessed to have crossed his path. When it was my time to leave he made it difficult for me, saying he needed me there cause we were a family but also understood why I wanted to leave to be with my family in Victoria. He always kept in touch through the years and I in turn sent pictures of my son and myself so he could see how far we had come.
I loved my job while working with him because the compassion he showed poured into all who worked there. I will never ever again work for a man of his standard. He was truly a blessing in my life and taught me a lot about compassion and life, and to never look down on anyone. I practically grew up under his wing. I will miss him deeply and I will miss being able to text him updated pictures of my son and tell him I loved him. I am truly devastated by this and pray that Mertie, Andrea, Eric and his grandchildren know that one day we will see him again. No words can ever express the pain I feel for his family and for him. I just know that our God is Awesome and will welcome him home where He is free.
Thank you Dr Wood for always being there for me and for allowing me to be part of your family. There is so much to say about you as a person but all who knew you, will always remember our talks. Love you DrWood
