Dr. Millard Clayton Calhoun passed away peacefully at his home in San Angelo, TX on March 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 25, 1935, in Germantown, PA, to Medford and Myrtle West Calhoun. A family move to Greenwood Delaware, placed him on a dairy farm, where he lived until graduating high school.
On May 29th, 1954, Millard married his soul mate and high school sweetheart Marguerite (Margie) Amelia Gerardi in Harrington DE. Together they were blessed with seven children: Karen Spoonts, Daniel Calhoun, Wanda Dwyer, Kirk Calhoun, Chris Calhoun, Michelle Reed, and Angela Jenkins.
He received his master’s degree at the University of Delaware and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Connecticut earning a PhD in Animal Science in 1963. Millard retired from Texas A&M after 36 years of service.
Millard set a tradition on their 50th anniversary of bringing the love of his life roses every week. He became a self-taught expert on the best roses to buy and where. They would have been married 72 years in May.
Fondly known as “Pop-Pop to his 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren”. Millard delighted them with his made-up songs and stories. He was quick witted, loved to laugh, and carried a deep passion for reading and lifelong learning.
He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church for 53 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Medford and Myrtle Calhoun; his brother, Leroy Calhoun; and his grandson, Timothy Lee Calhoun.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 16, 2026, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo, Texas. Inurnment will follow at the Holy Angels Catholic Church Columbarium.
Our family was blessed to have these amazing and caring women as caretakers and friends for our father: Maria Salas, Debbie Davis, Tammy Cealya, Onieda Diaz, Molly Riley, Diana Missouri, Melissa Gomez, Anita Davis, Dena Stewart, and Donna Gallegos.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Gabriel’s Hospice and, or Saint Judes.
We will miss his smile, laughter, wit and wisdom, but we rejoice in knowing he is with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23
