Dr. Paul Joseph Duggan of Hingham, Massachusetts passed away in the hands of God, and a loving embrace of gratitude with family by his side on November 7, 2025. Paul's life was rooted in his Catholic faith and never-ending dedication to caring for others as a family member, friend, and physician. He treasured his relationships and will always be remembered for his gentle, humble, and selfless spirit. Paul was a tremendous source of love, joy, comfort, wisdom, and inspiration for all who were blessed to know him; and was always an empathetic listener, provider, nurturer, teacher, and healer to his adoring family, friends, and patients.

Paul was born at St. Margaret's Hospital in Dorchester in 1936 and spent his childhood in a multi-generational household in Mattapan with his loving parents, sisters, and grandfather. From that foundation, Paul remained focused on those around him throughout his entire life. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, stepfather, papa, uncle, friend, and colleague. While stationed with the Navy in Washington D.C., Paul met his late wife, Eve Dittoe. Paul and Eve moved to Hingham in 1968 with their growing family. Together, as busy parents of four children, they built precious memories. In 1988 the family suffered a profound loss when Eve died. Paul faced adversity with his faith, courage, grace, and hope. Following the heartbreaking loss, Paul became a constant guiding light and source of love, support, and comfort for his children. Their love and gratitude for him are beyond measure. He was their North star, and always channeled Eve’s light and love to their minds and hearts. In 1991, Paul found love again when he married Lorraine Johnson and became a stepfather to her two sons, who had lost their father. Together, as parents of a family of eight, Paul and Lorraine fostered new traditions in a loving environment. Their love and care for each other were precious as they celebrated many milestones over the years with comfort and joy in their hearts. They met adversity with courage and grace and were admired for their solidarity and strength following the devastating loss of Lorraine’s son David in 2023.

Paul was a beacon of love and guidance to his nine grandchildren. He was always there for them –- sharing his wisdom, lifting them up, celebrating their happy news, attending their events, and comforting them. Paul was blessed with deep friendships. His first and forever friends were his beautiful sisters Mary and Kathleen; later, his sister-in-law Mary and brothers-in-law became integral to his cherished sibling circle. Throughout his childhood, years of education, experience in the Navy, medical career, and years in the community strong bonds were formed and grew into a large family of dear brothers. Miles never kept them apart; they were always there caring for one another.

Paul was grateful for every opportunity to embrace his lifelong pursuit of learning; and throughout his life he remained dedicated to the guiding values of his Jesuit education, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, for the Greater Glory of God, and men and women for and with others which emphasizes the goal to live selflessly and serve others. He attended St. Angela’s School, graduated from Boston College High School, College of the Holy Cross, and in 1962, Tufts Medical School. After interning at Seton Hall, Paul enlisted in the Navy and became a Lt. Medical Officer. He spent a year at sea out of Newport, RI before being stationed in Washington, D.C., and returning to Boston to complete his residency in internal medicine at Boston University. He started his private medical practice in Hingham in 1968 and later relocated to Weymouth where he served terms as President of the Medical Staff and Chief of Medicine at South Shore Hospital. He was an inspiration to his sons, Michael and Frank, who later became physicians.

In his retirement, Paul savored time with family and friends. He enjoyed tennis, golf, and spending precious time in two of his favorite spots, World's End and Sandy Beach. He loved to embrace the continued trajectory of learning through reading, attending lectures, and participating in discussion groups at the Hingham Senior Center. Together Paul and Lorraine built upon their lifelong enjoyment of travel and spent winters with dear friends in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Paul lived an exemplary and purposeful life by always being present and putting the needs of others before his own. He was an individual of integrity and compassion and touched the lives of a countless number of people. During the last two years, despite serious medical challenges, Paul persevered with fortitude and courage to continue to celebrate life with his family and all who loved and learned from him.

We will forever miss his smile, warmth, inspirational thoughts, wisdom, creativity, and witty sense of humor. We will forever hold his brilliant guiding light in our most grateful hearts.
