Dr. Philip Bernard Weinstein

July 20, 1936--June 28, 2025

Dr. Philip B. Weinstein of Long Beach, CA, a dedicated cardiologist, passed away on June 28, 2025, at the age of 88. Born and raised in Indianapolis, he was the son of Mollie and Musty Weinstein. Phil was an excellent student, graduating #1 in his 1954 class from Shortridge High School. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Indiana University.

Phil was an Intern and Medical Resident from 1961 to 1964 at the Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. His Medical Fellowship was done 1964-1967 at Ohio State University.

Phil served in the United States Army as a Major from 1967 to 1969. He was stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, Vietnam, from September 1967 to October 1968, and was there when the Tet Offensive began on January 30, 1968. Phil was a Triage doctor who decided what “level” of care all the wounded needed. While in the Army, Phil earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Phil’s experiences in Vietnam were life-altering.

Upon returning home, he established his cardiology practice in Long Beach, CA, as part of a 5-doctor cardio group practice. Later in his medical life, he became a solo family doctor. Phil was a “friend” of his patients, probably as much as he was their doctor.

Phil was an avid collector. He enjoyed collecting stamps from the time he was a teenager. He also collected coins and minor artifacts. Phil will be remembered as a very tender and kind person, as well as a caring doctor to all his patients.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lee Weinstein.

Phil is survived by his brother, Rick Weinstein, and sister-in-law, Rita Weinstein, as well as his nieces and nephews: Lisa Weinstein, Jill Weinstein, Adam Weinstein, Cyndee Williams, and Cary Weinstein.

A private service was held in Indianapolis.  Arrangements entrusted to Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home.
