Duane D. Burton, formerly of Orlando, Florida, passed from this life at his home in Nashville, Indiana, on September 12, 2025, at the age of 63. Born on December 14, 1961, in Columbus, Indiana, Duane was the cherished son of the late Richard "Dale" Burton and Mary Belle Zeigler Burton Thompson.
A proud 1981 graduate of Columbus North High School, Duane's early years were filled with the promise of youth and the close-knit bonds of community. He carried these values throughout his life, forming lasting friendships and leaving a positive impact on those he met. Duane's professional life was characterized by his expertise as an automotive transmission repairman, a skill that earned him respect and recognition in his field. In later years, he brought his warm demeanor to the role of a clerk at a 7-11 Convenience Store in Florida, where his friendly conversations became a staple for many regular customers.
Duane's love for NASCAR was more than a hobby; it was a passion that lit up his weekends as he cheered on his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon. His enthusiasm for the sport was infectious, and he could often be found recounting the latest race with vivid detail and excitement. Western movies were another source of joy for Duane and the classic film "Days of Thunder" held a special place in his heart.
Duane's family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his loving sister, AddEE Purciful (Ken Haley) of Nashville; his brother, Greg Burton of Taylorsville; his half-sisters, Jennifer McAllister of Edinburgh and Sherry Thompson of Florida; and his half-brothers, Jason Burton of Florida and Jimmy Thompson of Brown County. His legacy also lives on through the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
Preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Gordon and Ruby Burton and Harry and Gladys Zeigler, Duane now joins them in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the simple pleasures that make life worth living.
As we say goodbye to a man who was much more than the sum of his years, we celebrate the enduring mark he left on the world. Duane D. Burton will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In keeping with the family's wishes, cremation will take place and there are no services planned. In memory of Duane, memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 East 17th Street, Columbus, Indiana 47201 or cards are available at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
