Duane Allen Johnston, age 72, was welcomed into eternal life after a short illness on February 19, 2026.
Duane was born on March 8, 1953, in
Meadville, Pennsylvania. He spent most of his life in
Conneaut, Ohio, where he built a legacy of integrity, quiet strength, and deep love for his family. He worked as a truck driver and mechanic for Sidley's, retiring after 43 years of service. His strong work ethic and steady presence reflected his devotion to providing for those he loved, and he took great pride in a hard day's work. His children fondly remember being picked up for rides in the dump truck, thrilled to pull the air horn, and occasionally visiting the construction yard to drop off his lunch. Those small, ordinary moments became lifelong treasures.
He married his wife, Michele, in 1980, and together they shared a life marked by love, perseverance, and life's changing seasons.
Though a quiet soul by nature, Duane had deep passions that brought him joy throughout his life. From a young age, he had a love for cars and motorcycles. He enjoyed taking rides and attending car shows and museums, often bringing his children along for the adventure. He also adored music, especially The Beatles, and followed their careers and documentaries with enthusiasm. Once engaged in conversation, he could happily talk at length about history, automobiles, and anything that offered the opportunity to exchange knowledge in a good-natured conversation.
To his grandchildren, he was Papa, a gentle giant. He was patient, playful, and endlessly kind. He gave tractor rides, read stories, and wholeheartedly participated in their silly games. With them, his softer side shone most brightly, and their giggles brought back a younger energy in him.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and nephew. He is survived by his devoted wife, Michele; his son and two daughters; seven grandchildren; his sister; and several nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Duane will remember his quiet devotion, his subtle humor, and the way he showed love not always through words, but through unwavering presence. The legacy he leaves lives on in the cherished memories he created with his children and grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed and forever loved. The family will be celebrating his life in a private ceremony at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, our family invites you to honor Duane's life with a donation to The
Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Parkinson's touched our family through his mother, and supporting this cause reflects both our gratitude and our hope for better treatments and, one day, a cure.
