Duane Peter "Pete" Rule ObituaryIt is with heavy hearts our family shares the peaceful passing of Duane Peter Rule, 82, of Iron River, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Aspirus Hospital in Iron River.
Pete was born on November 14, 1942, in Stambaugh, MI, the firstborn son of the late Judith (Nyman) Rule and Harold Rule. He grew up in both Detroit and Iron River, graduating from Iron River High School. He later continued his education and taught welding classes at various universities.
In 1960, at age 17, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Army with his mother's permission. He served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. During his service, Pete held several roles including lineman, wireman, radio operator, and Military Police. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Upon returning, he often quoted the motto: "We're sure to go to HEAVEN, because we've served our time in HELL." In his later years, Pete was proud to make multiple trips to Washington, D.C., once with his nephew Jory and once with his friend Al on the Honor Flight to visit the Vietnam Memorial and honor fellow soldiers. These journeys were deeply meaningful to Pete, offering him a chance to reflect, honor fallen comrades, and share stories with fellow veterans.
After his military service, Pete worked in the mining industry and as a welder in the Milwaukee area. It was there he met the love of his life, Lynne. They were married for 25 years until her passing. Following her death, Pete retired and returned to the Upper Peninsula to be closer to family.
Living in the U.P. was a dream come true for Pete. He cherished being back among family and friends, and filled his days with traveling, fishing, hunting, and playing cards.
Hunting camp was a highlight of his retirement-filled with camaraderie, card games, and tall tales. His best season was marked by two large bucks and a huge smile as he posed proudly between them for a photo. Pete was always up for a challenge, especially when it came to crossword puzzles-often besting anyone who dared to compete. He also enjoyed frequent casino trips and weekly Sunday gatherings cheering on the Packers.
He is survived by his brother, Jim Rule; sister Linda (Tim) Tatosky; nephews, Matt and Jory; and many treasured friends.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lynne, and four stepchildren.
Pete will be remembered for his strength, humor, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. A celebration of Pete's life will be held at a future date.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Aspirus Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness shown to Pete. We are truly blessed to have such care in our community.
Memorials may be sent to the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight in honor of Duane "Pete" Rule.
In accordance with Pete's wishes, no formal services will be held.
